He married ANN date unknown. (ANN is #22215.) ANN was born 11 March 1805. ANN died 05 May 1851 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 46. Her body was interred after 05 May 1851 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
HENRY GRUBB purchased, what I believe was his first piece of land, on 13 May 1833, when he was only 28 years old. As you will find below he became quite a land speculator over the years. This plot was purchased from Abraham Shantz and his wife Mary and amounted to 27 acres and 65 perches and he paid them $2,570.00. It was located in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. and was right on the River Schuylkill and ran back to the Schuylkill Canal. I have not located the exact spot on the river. We can be sure it is all built up today as the Town of Parkersford has expanded up and down the river. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book Q4 Page 219.
On 12 June 1839 HENRY GRUBB purchased a small plot of land containing 3 acres. This was sold by Samuel Willaiur, the administrator of the estate of Joshua Hay, deceased. He paid $125.00 and it was located on the road between Hoffman's MIlls and Brownbacks in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. The deed is shown in Chester County Will Book R4 Page 298.
HENRY GRUBB purchased 66 acres and 96 perches of land from Daniel Grubb and his wife Sarah on 7 April 1842. He paid $2,850.00. The land was located on the road running from Hoffman's Mills to Pughtown which is in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book V4 Page 367.
On 18 April 1853 HENRY GRUBB purchased a piece of land on Ridge Road, East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. Ridge Road is southwest of where the original Grubbs settled but not far. It is near where Grubb Road meets Fulmer Road and near Brownback's Church and Burying Ground. It consisted of 4 acres and 39 perches and he paid $600. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book Y5 Page 66.
On 1 April 1861 HENRY GRUBB purchased a small piece of land from the estate of Edward Brownback Sr., deceased. It contained 6 acres and 60 perches and he paid $637.50. It was located on Ridge Road in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book P6 Page 560.
On 3 April 1862 HENRY GRUBB purchased 125 acres and 130 perches of land in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. from the Executors of the estate of his father, DAVID GRUBB JR, deceased. He paid $7,548.75. This land was located on Pigeon Creek and bounded on the east by Kulp Road. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book S6 Page 587.
HENRY GRUBB and ANN had the following children:
i. ELIZA ANN6 (#22216) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 1830. ELIZA died 24 March 1853 at age 22. She married SIMEON PRICE date unknown. (SIMEON PRICE is #22217.)
ii. SAMUEL (#22218) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 26 April 1836. SAMUEL died 1839 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 3. His body was interred 1839 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
62. CATHARINE5 GRUBB (DAVID4, DAVID3, GEORGE2, HEINRICH1) (#18083) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 17 September 1806. CATHARINE died 18 October 1864 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 58. Her body was interred after 28 October 1864 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
She married PETER GRUBB date unknown. (PETER GRUBB is #18081.) PETER was born 21 August 1801 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. PETER was the son of DAVID GRUBB and MARY HARLEY. PETER died 22 May 1882 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 80. His body was interred after 22 May 1882 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
PETER GRUBB purchased 85 acres and 129 perches at a sheriff's sale on 31 October 1825. He paid $850.00. It is shown in Chester County Deed Book Z3 Page 13. Unfortunately it doesn't state the location of the land except that it is bounded by the land of several people including JOHN GRUBB. I would think it is therefore in the area of Pigeon Creek near Kulp Road where most of the Grubb land was located.
PETER GRUBB and his wife CATHARINE GRUBB sold the above land to MICHAEL HUNSBERGER on 4 March 1834. This is shown in Chester County Deed Book G4 Volume 79 Page 369 held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
PETER GRUBB and CATHARINE GRUBB had the following child:
i. SARAH5 (#22213) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 07 November 1835. She married DAVID GRUBB WELLS date unknown. (DAVID GRUBB WELLS is #22210.) DAVID was born 12 September 1825. DAVID was the son of JESSE WELLS and MARIA (MARY) GRUBB. DAVID GRUBB WELLS was the first Burgess of Spring City, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
63. DAVID5 GRUBB (DAVID4, DAVID3, GEORGE2, HEINRICH1) (#18102) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 11 July 1808. DAVID died 20 June 1893 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 84. His body was interred after 20 June 1893 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
He married twice. He married CATHARINE LEHR GRUBB 13 December 1832. (CATHARINE LEHR GRUBB is #18103.) CATHARINE was born 01 August 1812. CATHARINE was the daughter of JOHN GRUBB and ELIZABETH LEHR. CATHARINE died 28 October 1845 at age 33. He married JULIANA STAGER after 1845. (JULIANA STAGER is #22220.) JULIANA was born 1807 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. JULIANA died 07 March 1889 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 81. Her body was interred after 07 March 1889 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
I found two deeds where a DAVID GRUBB purchased land in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. The problem is which DAVID GRUBB as both this DAVID's father and his grandfather were named DAVID. They were both living at the date of these deeds but I have elected to assign the purchases to this DAVID GRUBB (who I will designate "the 3rd"). He had been married only a couple of years so it would seem possible that he was just getting started on land of his own.
The first deed dated 8 April 1835 was when he purchased 23 acres and 146 perches from Abraham Brower and his wife Margaret. He paid $379.12 and the land was on a public road and bordered by the land of Widow Eckert, Samuel Sowder, Abraham Brower and David Grubb. (Was this land his or did it belong to his father or grandfather ? ). This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book T4 page 13 and is held by Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
The other deed is dated 4 April 1838. DAVID GRUBB purchased 9 acres and 68 perches of land from Michael Sisler and his wife Lettia. He paid $350 for this smaller plot but there was a house on the property. It was located on the road leading from Pughtown to Pottstown. This road led up the west side of Coventry Township, Chester County and this land was beside the land described in the first deed. I have not been able to find any of these names on an 1873 map and my earlier map of 1816 does not show individual farmer's names. However the distance from Pughtown to Pottstown is only about 3 or 4 miles so both properties must be located along this stretch of road. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book T4 page 15 and is held by Chester County Archives in West Chester,Pa.
DAVID GRUBB was a wheelwright as well as a farmer, in Coventry Township, Chester County. Pa. His wife CATHERINE LEHR died in 1845 leaving DAVID to raise 5 small children. Another son NATHAN had died the same year as his mother. DAVID remarried to JULIANA STAGER.
In 1859 a petition was filed with the Orphan's Court to appoint guardians for the minor children. This shows in Orphan's Court document 23, page 248 dated 22 September 1859.
The 1860 census shows DAVID GRUBB and wife JULIANA STAGER living on the farm in East Coventry Township with the nearest Post Office being Pottstown. His father DAVID GRUBB was living with them and he was now 86 years old. Five of the children from the first marriage and one from the present marriage were living at home. Chester County 1860 census Roll 1093 Book 1 Page 353.
In the 1870 census they were living in East Coventry and both 62 years of age. DAVID GRUBB died in 1861 at the age of 87. Roll 1323 Book 1 page 91.
When DAVID GRUBB died Intestate on 20 June 1893 two of his sons were appointed to administer the estate, DAVID HARRISON GRUBB and JOHN FRANKLIN GRUBB. These Administration Papers are dated 15 July 1893 and found in Chester County Will Book G Volume 7 Page 334. The estate amounted to $9,497.76.
DAVID GRUBB and JULIANA STAGER had the following child:
145 i. CHARLES PENRO6 was born 09 November 1829
DAVID GRUBB and CATHARINE LEHR GRUBB had the following children:
ii. MARIETTE (#22221) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1835. She married LOUIS HENRY FULMER date unknown. (LOUIS HENRY FULMER is #22222.) LOUIS was born 26 October 1840. LOUIS died 1896 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 55.
LOUIS HENRY FULMAN was a farmer and a butcher in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
146 iii. HENRY was born 22 January 1836
iv. NATHAN (#22223) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 13 March 1838. NATHAN died 13 February 1845 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 6. His body was interred after 13 February 1845 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
v. DAVID HARRISON (#22224) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 26 October 1840. DAVID died 12 March 1897 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 56.
D. HARRISON GRUBB was a farmer and butcher in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. As he died Intestate, his Administration Papers are found at the Chester County Archives in West Chester. The Estate File number is #25534 Chester County Will Book 7, page 401. The Administrator who was appointed was Frederick March. He advised the Court that the personal property (moveable goods) would not be sufficient to pay his debts and therefore the real estate would have to be sold. D. HARRISON GRUBB still owed his brothers and sisters proceeds from the estate of his father DAVID GRUBB JR. This debt amounted to $4,187.56 while the personal property was appraised at only $2,904 to #3,500.
There were 3 properties involved which were probably all adjacent to each other. They were in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. The first was 125 acres and 130 perches. This could be the same land as originally owned by his grandfather DAVID GRUBB SR. It is in the area of Pigeon Creek, Kulp Road, Eberhare Road and the road leading to Brownback's Church. The second was 61 acres and 85 perches. The third was 11 acres and 119 perches.
This land went up for auction and the highest bidder was Harrison's brother JOHN F. GRUBB. He got all this land at the auction for $5,250.00.The total estate then amounted to $13,473.62. By the time the debts were all paid and just like today, by the time the lawyers took their cut, the final estate amounted to only $4,667.00. This was divided evenly between the brother JOHN F. GRUBB, the sister MARIETTA GRUBB FULMER and the niece, ELLA PAUL. They each received $1,517.23.
A detailed inventory of the estate as well as copies of the Administration Papers are in my files. The detailed inventories are always very intereting as they give an insight into a farm of the time and also a glimpse into the person's personal life. The Administration Papers are #5564 in the Chester County Archives at West Chester, Pa. They are dated 1 September 1898.
147 vi. JOHN FRANKLIN was born 01 June 1842
vii. ELIZABETH ANN (#22235) was born 20 June 1845. ELIZABETH died 07 August 1867 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 22. Her body was interred after 07 August 1867 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
64. CHARLES5 GRUBB (DAVID4, DAVID3, GEORGE2, HEINRICH1) (#18106) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 15 August 1811. CHARLES died 25 February 1894 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 82. His body was interred after 25 February 1894 in Vincent Mennonite Cem. Chester Co..
He married twice. He married ELIZABETH ANN GRUBB date unknown. (ELIZABETH ANN GRUBB is #18107.) ELIZABETH was born 1816 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. ELIZABETH was the daughter of JOHN GRUBB and CATHARINE WALKER. ELIZABETH died 16 November 1856 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 40. Her body was interred after 16 November 1856 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa.. He married SARAH ANN GRUBB date unknown. (SARAH ANN GRUBB is #22237.) SARAH was born 19 February 1832 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. SARAH was the daughter of JOHN GRUBB and CATHARINE WALKER. SARAH died 16 February 1902 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 69.
In 1870 SARAH ANN GRUBB, wife of CHARLES GRUBB, was evidently acting as a housekeeper for William Yeager, a widower with 3 teenage children. Her husband CHARLES GRUBB was still living so presumably this was a part time job and she happened to be there the day they took the census. Roll 1377 Book 1 Page 455.
SARAH ANN died Intestate on 16 February 1902 and her son CHARLES I. GRUBB acted as Administrator of the estate. It was appraised at $7,609.24 including personal property, investments and a mortgage of $1,200 she had given to William Blanchford. There is no record in the file of the disbursement but the 3 heirs were her son CHARLES I. GRUBB and her 2 daughters, MARY L. and EMMA C. GRUBB, all of Spring City, Chester County, Pa.
The Estate file is #29,068 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
CHARLES GRUBB was a millwright in Upper Providence Township, Montgomery County, Pa. I am fairly sure he lived on the road which ran south west of Collegeville which was the first road south of Trappe. The reasoning behind this assumption is that his son DAVID HENRY GRUBB is shown on this land on the 1871 Montgomery County Atlas map. Shown in Montgomery County 1850 census Roll 799 Book 1 Page 303.
In 1860 CHARLES GRUBB was living in Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. with the nearest Post Office at Royersford. He was a carpenter by trade. He didn't have any real estate that he owned and his personal property was valued at $100 which must have been his carpenter tools. Montgomery County 1860 census Roll 1145 Book 1 Page 169.
By 1870 CHARLES GRUBB was a laborer in Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. He didn't own any property but his personal property was valued at $1.500 which is a lot higher than it was in 1860. The closest Post Office is Trappe. His first wife ELIZA ANN GRUBB, had died in 1856 and he had married her sister, SARAH ANN GRUBB. Her family name was really GRUBB. This was one of the confusing situations with Grubbs marrying cousins. Montgomery County 1870 census Roll 1377 Book 1 Page 452.
Living with them are ENNOS, age 18 and working as a farm hand, LOUISA, age 11, IRVIN, age 10 and EMMA, age 1.
However at some stage he must have moved to Spring City, Chester County, Pa. some time before his death on 25 February 1894. He died Intestate so two of his sons were appointed as Administrators, ENOS F. and CHARLES I. GRUBB. His widow SARAH ANN GRUBB was allowed by law to choose $300 value of personal goods before the estate was appraised.
The inventory was appraised and valued at $11,159.97. There is no record in the files as to distribution of the estate. Legally the widow could claim one third and the balance would be divided equally among all legal heirs. This would include sons, daughters and grandchildren.
The Administration file is #24,387 and the Orphan's court file is #1650. They are both held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
CHARLES GRUBB and ELIZABETH ANN GRUBB had the following children:
i. SAMUEL6 (#22238) was born in U. Prov. Twp, Montgomery Co. PA 1841.
148 ii. DAVID HENRY was born July 1842
iii. MARY L. (#22240) was born in U. Prov. Twp, Montgomery Co. PA December 1847. MARY died 23 July 1913 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 65.
MARY L. GRUBB was a spinster living with her younger spinster sister, EMMA C. GRUBB, on Chestnut Street in Spring City, Chester County, Pa, in 1900. She and her sister were both dressmakers and are shown in the 1900 census under Roll 1392 Book 2 Page 204A. At her death she left legacies to her brothers and sisters. Her Will is dated 24 June 1913 and it was probated 23 July 1913.
She left $300 to her brother ENOS FRANKLIN GRUBB and also $300 to her brother CHARLES IRWIN GRUBB. All the rest of her estate she left to her sister EMMA C. GRUBB and she appointed her as Executrix.
This will is #38,428 in Montgomery County Will Book 60 Page 626. It is held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
iv. SUSANNA (#22241) was born in U. Prov. Twp, Montgomery Co. PA 20 October 1850.
149 v. ENOS FRANKLIN was born 10 December 1852
CHARLES GRUBB and SARAH ANN GRUBB had the following children:
vi. LOVINA (#26372) was born in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1859.
vii. IRVIN (#26553) was born in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1860.
150 viii. CHARLES IRVIN was born 07 January 1861
ix. EMMA C. (#26353) was born in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. September 1870. EMMA died 25 October 1925 in Philadelphia, Phil. Co. PA, USA, at age 55. Her body was interred after 25 October 1925 in Zion Cem. E. Pikeland. Chester Co..
EMMA C. GRUBB was a spinster living with her older spinster sister, MARY L. GRUBB, in Spring City, Chester County, Pa, in 1900. She and her sister were both dressmakers and are shown in the 1900 census Roll 1392 Book 2 Page 204A.
She made her Will on 19 May 1921 but didn't actually die until 25 October 1925. Although her home had been in Spring City, Chester County, Pa., it shows in her Administration file that she died in Philadelphia, Pa. Her nephew RUDOLPH S. GRUBB administered the estate. At the time of her death she still owned a double brick house on South Main Street in Spring City.
In her Will she bequeathed $1,000 to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Spring City. She also left $1,000 to the Christian Science Society of Phoenixville, Pa. $200 was left to the Trustees of the Zion Cemetery in East Pikeland Township, Chester County, Pa. for the maintenance of her grave. Also she directed that a grave stone be erected similar to that of her sister Lovina. $200 was left to the Trustees of the Mennonite Cemetery in East Vincent, Chester County, Pa. for the maintenance of her father's grave.
$500 was bequeathed to the wife of her brother ENOS, who was HANNAH MARY STAUFFER. $100 each was given to 3 namesakes, MARY EMMA GRUBB, her niece, EMMA FRYER BARRETT and RACHAEL EMMA CULLIM. $300 each went to friends who had been of assistance during her illness. SALLIE J. RETHNAUER, KATIE FRYER CUSTER and LAURA V. TAYLOR. Other bequests went to MARIE FOWLER, $200, ANDORA ZUBER, $550, SARAH ZUBER, $550, EMMA KEELER BRAUER, $100.
All the balance of her estate was given to her brother, ENOS FRANKLIN GRUBB and he was appointed Executor. The total value of the estate was $18,022.65.
The above Will and Administration file is #40,845 and is held by the Register of Wills of Chester County in West Chester. Pa.
65. MARY5 GRUBB (DAVID4, DAVID3, GEORGE2, HEINRICH1) (#18111) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 21 February 1822. MARY died 07 July 1913 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 91. Her body was interred after 07 July 1913 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
She married DANIEL WALKER GRUBB date unknown. (DANIEL WALKER GRUBB is #22036.) DANIEL was born 28 January 1820 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. DANIEL was the son of JOHN GRUBB and MARY WALKER. DANIEL died 26 December 1864 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 44. His body was interred after 26 December 1864 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
IMPORTANT NOTICE
It is possible this DANIEL GRUBB is connected to the incorrect father and mother. When his supposed father, JOHN GRUBB died on 28 October 1863, his estate had to be divided by the Administrators appointed by the Court. JACOB GRUBB filed the petition naming all the heirs. This DANIEL GRUBB was not mentioned even though he was still alive when the petition was filed on 8 August 1864. It is true that this DANIEL GRUBB died very shortly afterwards on 26 December 1864. He had 3 sons who were not mentioned as heirs in the petition. This doesn't jibe with the fact that a son of a deceased daughter was mentioned as an heir.
DANIEL GRUBB purchased a very small plot of land from the estate of David Grubb when the executors sold the property on 3 April 1862. This DAVID GRUBB was his father-in-law. It was only 1 acre and 140 perches and he paid $198.75. It was near Kulp Road where it crossed Pigeon Creek in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. The deed is from Chester County Deed Book S6 page 585.
He and his wife MARY GRUBB and 3 sons are shown in the 1860 census with their real estate valued at $3,500 and personal property at $830. If this is the same land as he purchased from the estate of his father-in-law, he certainly had a bargain. Chester County 1860 census Roll 1093 Book 1 Page 360.
DANIEL WALKER GRUBB died Intestate on 26 September 1864. All three of his sons were minors at the time of his death so it was the law that the estate had to be probated through the Orphan's Court. Also guardians had to be appointed for the children even though the mother, Mary, was still alive.
Jacob Connor was appointed as the guardian for the oldest boy Milton P, Grubb, age 12. Thomas Frances was appointed for the next son, Daniel Webster Grubb, John Grubb was appointed guardian for the third son, William Irvin Grubb.
The real estate only comprised two small lots of a quarter acre and 2 acres. The guardians declared to the Orphan's Court the property was in such a state of decay and unproductive, that it couldn't provide for the children's education and maintenance. The Court agreed and said to sell the property which they did for $220.00 for one lot and $165.50 for the other.
Widow MARY GRUBB elected to keep $300.00 worth of personal property and two appraisers were appointed, William Posey and Benjamin Frederick. A copy of the $300.00 appraisal on the personal property Mary kept, is in my files. The Orphan's Court is # 14,919, document 25, page 124, dated 20 November 1865.
MARY GRUBB is shown living on the north side of Schoolhouse Road between Bishop's Road and Porter's Mill Road in the 1873 Chester County Farm Atlas under East Coventry Township. Here is another situation where a Grubb married a cousin as MARY GRUBB was a cousin of her husband DANIEL WALKER GRUBB. It gets to be a tangled relationship as MARY's father DAVID GRUBB and her mother ELIZABETH GRUBB had been cousins when they married. MARY's husband DANIEL WALKER GRUBB had died many years before in 1864. On the 1883 Breou's Farm Atlas it shows MILTON GRUBB, her son, living on this 36 acres even though MARY GRUBB is still alive and didn't die until 1913 when she was 91 years old.
After MARY GRUBB died two of her sons filed a petition to have themselves appointed as administrators of her estate. This was MILTON P. GRUBB and WILLIAM I. GRUBB. There was another son DANIEL WEBSTER GRUBB but he is not mentioned and may have died before his mother. There is no inventory filed with this petition so we don't know the extent of the estate. MILTON shown above as living on the land formerly occupied by his mother, may have already taken over the farm previously because his mother was so old.
The Letter of Administration is File # 34122 dated 8 January 1914 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester. Pa.
DANIEL WALKER GRUBB and MARY GRUBB had the following children:
i. FRANKLIN6 (#26610) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 1850.
151 ii. MILTON PERCE was born 22 September 1852
iii. DANIEL WEBSTER (#23308) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1856.
DANIEL WEBSTER GRUBB was a minor when his father DANIEL WALKER GRUBB died Intestate. A guardian was appointed as was the law in the Orphan's Courts, His guardian was Thomas Frances and you can read details of the Court settlements in the biographical notes for DANIEL WALKER GRUBB. The Orphan's Court files are # 4,919, docket 25, page 124, dated 20 November 1865. Copy is in my files.

He married LYDIA DEFRAIN date unknown. (LYDIA DEFRAIN is #26569.) LYDIA was born April 1839. LYDIA was the daughter of BENJAMIN DEFRAIN.
In 1870 VALENTINE GRUBB was living on his own farm in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. He had married LYDIA DEFRAIN and they had 2 children, HARRY, age 4 and ZELLA, age 2. His father-in-law, BENJAMIN DEFRAIN. age 82, was living with them. Also living there was VALENTINE's sister, HENRIETTA, age 45. The farm real estate is valued at $13,000 and his personal property at $600. Chester County 1870 census Roll 1323 Book 1 Page 88.
The above farm was shown on the 1883 Breou's Farm Atlas map as being on the northeast corner of Schoolhouse Road and Porter's Mill Road. It contained 47 acres and 28 perches. But on the earlier East Coventry map of 1873 the location is shown as being on the south side of Porter's Mill Road which makes it south of Pigeon Creek. These two places are within a quarter mile of each other so it may be that one of the maps was wrong.
By 1900 they were living at the same farm but only their daughter ZELLA and VALENTINE's sister HARRIET are living with them. LYDIA's father must have died in the meantime and son HARRY is out on his own. Chester County 1900 census Roll 1392 Book 2 Page 75a.
VALENTINE GRUBB and LYDIA DEFRAIN had the following children:
i. HARRY (HARVEY)6 (#26571) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P March 1866. He married ANNIE L. 1893. (ANNIE L. is #26599.) ANNIE was born January 1870.
HARRY GRUBB, son of VALENTINE GRUBB and LYDIA DEFRAIN, married ANNIE L. in 1893 but we don't know her family name. In 1900 he was farming in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. Chester County 1900 census Roll 1392 Book 2 Page 79.
By 1910 he has moved to farming in North Coventry Township but again we don't know the exact location.. He and his wife don't seem to have had any children . If they had survived they would have shown up in one of the census. Chester County 1910 census Roll 1328 Book 1 Page 275.
They were still farming in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. in 1920. By this date HARRY and ANNIE were the last GRUBB family in North Coventry Township. As they had no children this GRUBB line would die out in this immediate area. Chester County 1920 cenus Roll 1550 Book 2 page 21.
In the 1930 census they have moved to Pottstown Landing Village which is on the west side of the Schuylkill River, in North Coventry Township, across from Pottstown proper. It is probably located somewhere along River Road. He is 64 years old by this time and is working as a laborer in a coal yard. Chester County 1930 census Roll 2020 Book 1 Page 81.

She married CHARLES GRUBB date unknown. (CHARLES GRUBB is #18106.) CHARLES was born 15 August 1811 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. CHARLES was the son of DAVID GRUBB JR. and ELIZABETH GRUBB. He married SARAH ANN GRUBB date unknown. CHARLES died 25 February 1894 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 82. His body was interred after 25 February 1894 in Vincent Mennonite Cem. Chester Co..
79. AMOS WALKER5 GRUBB (JOHN4 GRUBB, JOHN CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#24168) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 25 December 1817. AMOS died 21 May 1896 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 78. His body was interred after 21 May 1896 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
He married CHARLOTTE H. date unknown. (CHARLOTTE H. is #24484.) CHARLOTTE was born 18 June 1828. CHARLOTTE died 05 July 1885 in S. Coventry Twp, Chester Co. PA, at age 57. Her body was interred after 05 July 1885 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
CHARLOTTE, wife of AMOS GRUBB, made her will on 3 April 1883. Her first bequest was to leave her daughter, CATHERINE, $1. This is usually done when the deceased has granted money to a child already but usually a Will specifies that the child has received his or her inheritance beforehand. We don't know the family name of CHARLOTTE but they lived in South Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa.
CHARLOTTE appointed her husband Executor and he ws to receive the income from any personal property or real estate CHARLOTTE had owned. After his death the principal would be divided equally among three children, WESLEY, HANNAH and GEORGE.
The Will was not probated until 3 August 1885 so presumably CHARLOTTE died closer to that date. The will is file #21,091 proved 3 August 1885 Chester County Will Book B2 Volume 27 Page 142.
AMOS GRUBB was a merchant in Frederick, Montgomery County, Pa. in 1850. Shown in census Roll 799 Book 1 Page 157b. By 1870 he is shown in the census as a Book Agent in East Coventry, Chester County, Pa. This is Roll 1323 Book 1 Page 80. But on 20 April 1874 he purchased 64 perches of land in South Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. He bought this little piece of land from Charles McGriffith and his wife Martha. He paid $10. The deed stated it was next to the land of Samuel Porter but also next to the land of CHARLOTTE GRUBB. Now this creates a mystery as CHARLOTTE GRUBB was the wife of AMOS GRUBB.
Looking further into deeds I found that on 2 April 1874 CHARLOTTE H. GRUBB had purchased 19 acres and 140 perches of land in this same location in South Coventry Township. She paid $2,800. to Joseph Bartolett for this property but it is very unusual that land was purchased in the name of the wife if her husband was still living which he was. Then why 3 weeks later did AMOS GRUBB buy a tiny bit of land beside the main plot and put it in his own name ?
The first deed is found in Chester County Deed Book P8 page 9 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
The second deed is found in Chester County Deed Book P8 page 8 held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
AMOS WALKER GRUBB and CHARLOTTE H. had the following children:
i. CATHERINE6 (#24485) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA.
iii. SAMUEL T. (#24605) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA 10 November 1847. SAMUEL died 12 May 1855 in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA, at age 7. His body was interred after 12 May 1855 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
iv. WILLIAM B. (#24606) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA 24 December 1851. WILLIAM died 18 May 1855 in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA, at age 3. His body was interred after 18 May 1855 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
v. MARTHA VICROREEN (#24607) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA 19 August 1854. MARTHA died 17 January 1857 in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA, at age 2. Her body was interred after 17 January 1857 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
vi. HANNAH (#24487) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA 1860.
vii. GEORGE (#24488) was born in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA 1866.
80. GEORGE WALKER5 GRUBB (JOHN4, JOHN CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22042) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 01 April 1826. GEORGE died 11 October 1885 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 59. His body was interred after 11 October 1885 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
He married ELIZA MILLER date unknown. (ELIZA MILLER is #22043.) ELIZA was born 22 September 1827. ELIZA died 16 June 1891 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 63. Her body was interred after 16 June 1891 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
This is a case where we have the Administration Papers for a husband and then 6 years later for the widow. We saw when GEORGE WALKER GRUBB died, his widow ELIZA MILLER GRUBB, was allowed to choose $300.00 worth of household goods to keep. Other than that there was only 11 shares of stock in the Spring City Bank valued at $1.540.00. But by the time the debts were paid the estate was valued at $1,401,75.
Now widow ELIZA MILLER GRUBB has died on 16 June 1891. Her two sons HARRY C. GRUBB and JOHN S. GRUBB, renounced their right to administer the estate and chose JOHN FRICK as Administrator. The estate is valued at $4.316.82 which includes the 11 shares of Spring City Bank stock, now valued at $1,650,00. The rest is mainly made up of two mortgages she has financed for Mary Hunsburger and Jonas Belman and these amount to $2.500.00. There was no mention of these in the will of George Grubb so Eliza must have obtained this money someplace since his death or been holding the mortgages in her name when he died. Interesting speculation but we will never know the true answer.
This will is #23,335 in Chester County Archives, in West Chester, Pa. Found in Book G Volume 6 Page 263.
GEORGE WALKER GRUBB was a carpenter in East Coventry Township, Chester County Pa. in 1870 where he appears in the census Roll 1323 Book1 Page 80. GEORGE's mother CATHARINE (KATE) WALKER is living with them.
When GEORGE WALKER GRUBB died on 11 October 1885, his widow ELIZA MILLER and two sons, HARRY C. GRUBB and JOHN S. GRUBB, all renounced their right to act as administrators. GEORGE had died Intestate so 3 Administrators were appointed, Daniel Benner, William Davis and John Frick. They filed a security bond with the Court for $3,080.00.
There was a law to allow the widow to choose $300.00 worth of goods from the estate before it is administered. It is called "Widow's Election".The list of the items ELIZA MILLER GRUBB chose to keep, makes interesting reading to see what she valued.
There doesn't seem to be any real estate involved so they must have been renting wherever they were located. Also there is very little in household goods other than what widow ELIZA elected to keep. However there were 11 shares of stock in the Spring City Bank which were valued at $1,540.00. These were evidently sold to raise cash to pay any debts and so the estate value ended up at $1,401.75.
The Estate FIle is #21,169 in the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.. They are in Book G Volume 7 Page 62.
GEORGE WALKER GRUBB and ELIZA MILLER had the following children:

81. SARAH ANN5 GRUBB (JOHN4, JOHN CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22237) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 19 February 1832. SARAH died 16 February 1902 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 69.
She married CHARLES GRUBB date unknown. (CHARLES GRUBB is #18106.) CHARLES was born 15 August 1811 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. CHARLES was the son of DAVID GRUBB JR. and ELIZABETH GRUBB. He married ELIZABETH ANN GRUBB date unknown. CHARLES died 25 February 1894 in Spring City, Chester Co. Pa., at age 82. His body was interred after 25 February 1894 in Vincent Mennonite Cem.
CHARLES GRUBB and SARAH ANN GRUBB had the following children:
i. LOVINA6 (#26372) was born in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1859.
ii. IRVIN (#26553) was born in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1860.
150 iii. CHARLES IRVIN was born 07 January 1861
iv.
By the 1900 census he is 75 and farming in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County Pa. with his wife MARIA. However all of their children have departed. Roll 1443 Book 1 Page 285a.
During all this time it doesn't appear that JOSHUA ever owned any land and this is clearly shown at the time of his death. He may have been leasing land as they classify him as a Farmer. This usually means he is operating a farm. They classified them as Farm Laborers if they were just working as a farm hand on somebody else's farm.
JOSHUA GRUBB died Intestate on 19 August 1905. His eldest son JOHN E. GRUBB was appointed Administrator for the small estate which was valued at $200. SUSANNA REITENAUER, widow of PHILIP H. GRUBB died Intestate on 3 October 1901. Two of her sons were appointed as Administrators, HENRY and JOHN. They filed an inventory of the personal goods and these were sold at auction. The value amounted to $1,812.79 which was divided equally among the 5 living children and the son of deceased daughter ALICE, They each received $302.13. There was no mention of any real estate involved.
These documents are Montgomery County Will #22537 and Orphan's Court file #24966. These are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
PHILIP H. GRUBB was a farmer on 78 acres of land in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His neighbours were John Reitenaur (probably his wife's brother ot father), Adam Moyer, Henry Underkoffler and Edwin Reitenaur. This farm was located east of Society Creek and south of the road from Perkiomenville where it went through the tiny settlement of Roseville to meet the Great Road (Skippack Pike now called Highway #73).
In the 1860 census, when PHILIP and SUSANNA where just starting to farm soon after their marriage, the real estate was valued at $1,650 and their personal goods at $400. But by 1870 the farm was valued at $4,000 and their personal belongings at $1,500. Four of their children are living with them, HENRY, JOHN, PHILIP and SUSANNA. Montgomery County 1870 census ROLL 1377 book 1 PAGE 374.
PHILIP made his Will on 17 October 1879 but didn't die until 26 October 1879. He stipulated that his wife, SUSANNAH REITENAUR, was to have the use of part of the house but she was to rent out the farm on a share basis and she would receive her share of the crops. His widow however would have to maintain the farm in good condition. She could continue with this arrangement as long as she wished or until she remarried. If either of these two options should happen then the Executor was to sell the farm and divide two thirds of the proceeds among his children and the other third to SUSANNAH, his wife. Unfortunately he did not name the children individually so we have no proof in the Will as to their names.
SUSANNAH could take $300 value of goods of her choice before the estate was settled. This was a Commonwealth law at the time whether a person had it in his Will or not. The Executor named by PHILIP in the Will was George W. Steiner. The personal estate value filed by the Executor was $1,455.25 after deducting debts. These Administration papers and Will are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. and are #22,113 , Will # 2352, Book 15, Page 346. They are also filed with the Orphan's Court File #6941 Book 1 Page 630.

176 x. ALICE was born 19 September 1876
88. JOSIAH5 GRUBB (HENRY SCHETLER4, HEINRICH CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22130) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 19 May 1838. JOSIAH died 06 January 1900 in N. Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa, at age 61. His body was interred after 06 January 1900 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
He married LOVINA S. ZERN date unknown. (LOVINA S. ZERN is #22131.) LOVINA was born 13 May 1840. LOVINA died 08 April 1934 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 93.
LOVINA S. ZERN widow of JOSIAH GRUBB in 1930 was living with her daughter KATIE ZERN GRUBB, married to WILLIAM K. KRAUSE. They were living in Zieglersville, Lower Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. They are shown in the 1930 census Roll 2082 Book1 Page 132.
JOSIAH GRUBB, with his wife LOVINA ZERN,, were just starting out farming in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. in 1860. They evidently didn't own any real estate at this stage and their personal property is valued at $1,350. ABRAHAM ZERN, age 18, is helping them on the farm. I assume he was LOVINA's brother. Montgomery County 1860 census Roll 1145 Book 1 Page 54.
The 1870 census shows JOSIAH GRUBB and his wife LOVINA were living in Franconia Township, Montgomery County. Pa. Their one child at this date was MARY ESTHER who was 3 years old. JOSIAH was a tin and sheet iron worker as was his brother AARON. Census Roll 1377 Book 1 Page 333.
By 1880 JOSIAH GRUBB and his family were farming in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pa. Their children now were MARY ESTHER, age 13, HENRY ELLSWORTH, age 8, KATE, age 7 and AARON N. GRUBB, age 1. Montgomery County 1880 census Roll 1159 Book 1 Page 205.
When JOSIAH GRUBB died on 6 January 1900 his wife LOVINA ZERN filed a petition with the Court to renounce all her rights of administration. She asked the Court to appoint NATHAN ZERN as Administrator and I am assuming he was her brother. When he took an inventory it amounted to $577.36. By law the widow could take $300 value of goods of her choice which she did. There was no mention of any real estate so there was practically nothing left in the estate to divide among the children.
It shows in the Court records that they lived in New Hanover Townshiop so they probably lived in the same area as his father's mill. This was located at the junction of Colonial Road and the road leading to Fagleysville on the border of Upper Frederick Township and New Hanover Township.
The above documents are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. The file under Wills is #21681 and the Orphan's Court is #23532.
JOSIAH GRUBB and LOVINA S. ZERN had the following children:
i. LOVINA6 (#22137) was born in N. Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 02 August 1860. LOVINA died 27 May 1893 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 32. Her body was interred after 27 May 1893 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co.. She married CHARLES REDFERN date unknown. (CHARLES REDFERN is #22138.)
LOVINA GRUBB at the age of 19 was working as a servant in the home of Franklin Underkiefler in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. Shown in the 1880 census for Frederick Township.
ii. ELIZABETH AMANDA (#22139) was born in N. Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 06 November 1863. ELIZABETH died 15 August 1869 in N. Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa, at age 5.
iii. MARY ESTHER ZERN (#22133) was born in Franconia Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa. 23 November 1866. She married UNKNOWN TAGGERT date unknown. (UNKNOWN TAGGERT is #25865.)
MARY ESTHER ZERN GRUBB was living in Perkiomen, Montgomery County, Pa. at the time of her father's death in 1900.
177 iv. HENRY ELLSWORTH ZERN was born 20 March 1872
v. KATIE ZERN (#25866) was born in Franconia Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa. 1873. She married WILLIAM K. KRAUSE date unknown. (WILLIAM K. KRAUSE is #26414.) WILLIAM was born 1877.
vi. WILLIAM ZERN (#22136) was born in U. Salford Twp, Montgomery Co. PA 10 June 1879.
WILLIAM ZERN GRUBB was living in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pa. at the time of his father's death in 1900.
vii. AARON N. (#26505) was born in U. Salford Twp, Montgomery Co. PA 1879.
89. MARGARET AMANDA5 GRUBB (HENRY SCHETLER4, HEINRICH CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22126) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 29 September 1840.
She married HENRY K. KEYSER 17 December 1864. (HENRY K. KEYSER is #22127.)
MARGARET AMANDA GRUBB and HENRY K. KEYSER had the following children:
i. CATHARINE6 (#26601) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1866.
ii. JACOB (#26602) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 1870.
82. HENRY SWEISFORD5 GRUBB (JACOB4, HEINRICH CHRISTMAN3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#18351) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 22 January 1831. HENRY died 14 March 1913 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 82. His body was interred after 14 March 1913 in Leydich Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont.Co..
He married twice. He married HANNAH MARKLEY TYSON 01 September 1855. (HANNAH MARKLEY TYSON is #18357.) HANNAH was born 19 August 1836 Perkiomen Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. HANNAH was the daughter of BENJAMIN Z. TYSON and MARY MARKLEY. HANNAH died 02 April 1893 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 56. Her body was interred after 02 April 1893 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
The father of HANNAH MARKLEY TYSON GRUBB, BENJAMIN Z. TYSON made out a lengthy Will before he died leaving $1,000 to his widow plus the interest from one third of the estate which was to remain invested. The balance of his real estate and personal property was to be sold and the proceeds divided equally among his 7 children. However for some reason he singled out HANNAH GRUBB and specified that her portion which amounted to $1,926.76 would be divided between the 3 brothers and they would hold it in trust and pay her interest on it yearly. A very strange arrangement indeed and maybe brought on by some dispute between her father and husband.
This arrangement did not sit well with HANNAH and her husband. Maybe the breaking point came when the brothers as administrators sold the father's farm to one of the brothers for $4,000. This was illegal as by law in cases like this it was supposed to be sold at public auction. At any rate HANNAH and her husband filed a petition with the Orphan's Court to have the brothers removed as administrators of their father's estate on the grounds they were financially not responsible people. This started a long series of Court hearings where the brothers had to appear and defend themselves against this charge. They had to disclose their financial standing, indebtedness and how they ran their businesses. They had to bring in character witnesses but in the end the Court agreed with HANNAH and the brothers were removed from the administration of the estate. It was put in the hands of the Montgomery County Loan and Safe Deposit Company in Norristown, Pa. All these files are held by the Montgomery county Archives under Orphan's Court #6580.
HANNAH GRUBB would still only receive the interest from her legacy as that stipulation could not be changed in her father's Will. And the ironical part of all this wrangling over a small amount was that HANNAH died on 2 April 1893, even before all the Court papers were finalized. She died Intestate so her husband HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB petitioned the Court to appoint their son HENRY TYSON GRUBB to be Administrator of the estate. This was done and the son filed the final papers which split the proceeds with one third going to the husband and the rest being divided among the 5 children. There is no inventory filed among the papers so I don't know what the final amount of her estate would be.
These files are Orphan's Court #23746 and are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
He married AMANDA AUGSTADT (UMSTEAD) 1894. (AMANDA AUGSTADT (UMSTEAD) is #19988.) AMANDA was born 1847. She married UNKNOWN AUGSTADT date unknown.
HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB lived near Fagleysville, New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, Pa. at one time but in the 1870 census it shows him in Frederick Township with the nearest post office at Hoppenville. His real estate is valued at $6,000 and personal property at $1,500. Montgomery County 1870 census Roll 1377 Book 1 Page 372.
In the 1877 Frederick Township Atlas he appears as farming 50 acres at the corner of Colonial Road and Fagleysville Road. This was where the GRUBB MILL was located where three roads converged in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. The three roads were Colonial Road (formerly Stettler's Road), which runs west from the Skippack Pike (now highway #73), the Fagleysville Road and the Obelisk Road. This was where the Swamp Creek crossed the latter road. The mill was actually on the tail race which led down from the Grubb Dam further up the creek. Just across the road was the homestead of the Grubb family for many years. This is a frame house but the original Grubb home was a log cabin. I don't know whether the frame house was renovated around the old log cabin or whether it is a completely new house. There was about 60 acres of land on the farm.
Dr. Willard Grubb whose family lived here at one time, says his grandfather told him about a large ice house on the property. This was at a time when they had to cut the ice in the winter and store it in sawdust and hope it lasted through the summer months.
The following are the details of the properties purchased by HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB.
1. 18 April 1862. Purchased from Henry Statler and wife, 17 acres and 157 perches beginning in middle of road leading from Keeley's farm to Place's Mill.. Complete metes and bounds description is in my files but it was bounded by land of Henry Statler, Jacob Rhoads, John Bertolet and Daniel Statler. It doesn't show the price of this land but Henry took a mortgage which is found in Montgomery County Mortgage Book 130 Page 230. The deed is in Deed Book 128 Page 241.These two documents are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
2. 6 April 1869. $1,571 Purchased from the Executors of the estate of Samuel H. Bertolet, 34 acres and 140 perches and including a messuage, grist mill and saw mill. Complete metes and bounds description is in my files but it started at corner of Jacob Rhoads land and continued by land of Samuel Bertolet to a post in Swamp Creek and then by land of Joseph Bitting and Widow Bertolet. This would be partly in New Hanover Township and partly in Upper Frederick Township. This clearly shows that the grist mill and the saw mill were on the property when he bought it. Presumably it is the same mill originally called the Bertolet Mill on the Swamp Creek.
In the same release was another 14 acres and 142 perches which began at the corner of Widow Bertolet's land to a post in Swamp Creek and then by land of Francis Leidigh.
The above two transactions are found in Montgomery County Misc. Deed Book 14 Page 88 held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
3. 24 April 1878 $3,405 Purchased from M. S. Hauck and his wife Leone, 64 acres and 21 perches Beginning by land of Josiah Schuris. Complete metes and bounds description is in my files but it went to a post in the middle of Swamp Creek and then by lands of Philip Nyse, Elizabeth Krause Samuel Bertolet and Benjamin Markley. This land would be partly in New Hanover Township and partly in Limerick Township.
On the same deed was another 2 acres and 62 perches starting in the middle of Swamp Creek and going by the lands of John Gilbert, Josiah Schuris, Philip Christman, Jacob Keeley and M. S. Hauck.
The above two transactions are found in Montgomery County Deed Book 256 Page 273 held by Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
4. 1 November 1888 $20 Purchased from John G. Bertolet 25 and a half perches of land near Swamp Creek. This was obviously bought to improve the mill race. This was found in Montgomery County Deed Book 369 page 29 recorded 16 May 1892. It is held by the Recorder of Deeds in Norristown, Pa.
NOTE - All of these lands are adjacent to each other even though they are in 3 different townships. This is the corner where New Hanover, Limerick and Frederick townships all come together. Also the 64 acres and 21 perches he bought from M. S. Hauk is the same land as his father JACOB GRUBB had received from the heirs of John Saylor. in 1871 for $400. So how it got from Jacob Grubb to M. S. Hauk is a mystery. Also we don't know the building date of the grist and saw mills. Dr. Willard Y. Grubb says that he was told when he was a child that his g-g-g-grandfather Jacob Grubb had bought the land and mill for $400 from the Saylor family which is the same information contained in the release detailed in the biographical notes for JACOB GRUBB.
Henry Sweisford Grubb must have run into some financial difficulties around the turn of the century. At the June 1903 Term of the Court of Common Please in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pa. a plea was filed against Henry S. Grubb by Joseph Thomas and Mary K. Rittenhouse. They were Executors of the estate of the deceased Mary Thomas. This was the start of some very strange legal proceedings. They claimed Henry S. Grubb owed them $3,326. I could not find the details on this debt and whether it was a mortgage Henry had taken on his property or just a loan he had negotiated with them. In any case the Court ordered John Largelere, who was the High Sheriff of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to seize all the land, chattels, mills and other buildings of Henry S. Grubb. He proceeded to do this but they determined the revenue by operating the mills would not be enough to pay off the debt. So the Court told him to try and find a buyer. When no buyers came forward the Court told him to sell it at public auction. The law stipulated he had to publicize the auction by advertisements in two local newspapers and distributing handbills. The auction date was set for 23 September 1903 at 2 PM. All these details are found in Sheriff's Deed Book R Page 369 held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa..
Here is where this gets unusual to say the least. The highest bidder turned out to be the plaintiffs Joseph Thomas and Mary K. Rittenhouse. They bid $3,950.and so became the owners of all the property and mills. They must have figured they were better off to buy the property. They would get their debt paid by the Court which would nearly cover the debt and they would end up owning the property which would be worth more than their bid and debt. I guess it made financial sense but this is the first time I have seen it handled in this way. We always knew that Henry Sweisford Grubb's son, Henry Tyson Grubb. ended up with the property and mills, but we had always assumed it had been a normal inheritance. So how did he get it back? On 21 November 1904 it was all sold back to him for $3,600 by Joseph Thomas and Mary K. Rittenhouse.
The 1877 Montgomery county Atlas shows a HENRY S. GRUBB with 50 acres further east on Colonial Road but this farm belonged to HENRY SHETLER GRUBB. Very, very confusing when 2 men have the same first name, middle initial and surname. Especially when they are living within a half a mile of each other.
In the 1880 census for Frederick Township, it shows HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB as a farmer and 4 of his sons are still living at home. JACOB who is 20 by this time is shown as a miller so obviously he helped in his father's mill. However by 1900 he had moved to Reading, Pa.
In 1893 his wife HANNAH MARKLEY TYSON died Intestate and her husband requested the court to allow their son HENRY TYSON GRUBB to administrate the estate. This was granted and he filed the petition on 21 March 1904 to recognize the legal heirs. This is Administration File #223746 held by Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB remarried in 1894 to a widow AMANDA AUGSTADT (or in some records UMSTEAD). She had 3 daughters by her previous marriage who came to live in the HENRY GRUBB family. They were MAGGIE, 16, LIZZIE, 13 and ELLEN, 11. These ages are for 1900 where they show in the census for Frederick Township Roll 1442 Book 2 Page 193A. In the 1910 census for New Hanover Township he and AMANDA are still farming but he is shown in this census as HARRY. Roll 1378 Book 2 Page 35.

DR. WILLARD Y. GRUBB, g-grandson of HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB kindly supplied much of the information about the GRUBB MILL. In 2003 he is residing at 287 Norman Drive, Cranberry Township, Pa. 16066
HENRY SWEISFORD GRUBB and HANNAH MARKLEY TYSON had the following children:
179 ii. JACOB TYSON was born 24 November 1859
180 iii. KATHRYN TYSON was born 13 March 1861
iv. HANNAH TYSON (#18363) was born 11 April 1863. HANNAH died 26 July 1864 at age 1. Her body was interred after 26 July 1864 in Keeler's Cem., Frederick Twp. Mont. Co..
181 v. HENRY TYSON was born 07 April 1865
vi. AARON TYSON (#18366) was born in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa. 07 April 1865. AARON died 17 November 1927 in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA, at age 62.
AARON TYSON GRUBB was living near Fagleysville, New Hanover Township, at the time his mother's Administration Papers were being processed in 1904. However by the time of AARON's death on 17 November 1927 he was living in Upper Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. He was evidently never married and had no real estate. He suffered from a mild case of cerebral palsy which was attributed to some injury he suffered at birth. He was a twin and if he was the second born this may account for his medical problems as the statistics for the second twin born show a very high death rate or physical injury rate.
He worked at the Grubb Mill located at the corner of Colonial Road and Fagleysville Road. The house used by the millers was on this corner and is still standing in 1996. In the book History of Upper Frederick Township, there is a photo on page 119 of AARON GRUBB on horseback in front of the house with some other family members standing on the porch.
He made his will on 22 January 1926 and was obviously seriously ill at the time. He stipulated that after his debts and medical expenses were paid, any residue was to go to the person who cared for him in his last illness. His twin brother Henry T. Grubb was to be his Executor.
His personal goods amounted to $1,208.48. But by the time this was being probated Henry T. Grubb had also died and so his son Charles B. Grubb was appointed Administrator. It was shown that Cora B Grubb, widow of Henry T. Grubb was the person who had nursed AARON T. GRUBB in his last illness and so she was granted the full amount of the estate.
The will was #42555 Montgomery County Will Book 68 Page 457 proved 24 November 1927. The Orphan's Court File is #39013. These are all held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. Co.

SAMUEL TYSON GRUBB was living in Worcester, Pa. in 1904 at the time his mother's Administration Papers were being processed and was still there at the time of his death. He owned a large dairy farm on Potshop Road in Worcester Township, Montgomery County, Pa. It consisted of a house and 92 acres 56 perches of land. He also owned 3 lots and houses in Norristown, Pa.
SAMUEL TYSON GRUBB was not married and when he made his will on 5 May 1931 he put it in the hands of the Colonial Northeast Trust Company as Administrators. This company was later merged with the Berks County Trust Company. He stipulated that all his personal goods and real estate should be sold. He also wanted to be buried in the cemetery at Bally, Pa. and a monument erected there similar to his brother's monument, Jacob. T. Grubb.
By the time the real estate was sold, his estate was quite extensive and amounted to $16.820 but was subject to an Estate Tax of 10 %. He left $1.000 to MAMIE SHIREY. One report says she was his adopted sister but this has not been confirmed. The remainder of the estate was divided into 3 shares. One share was to go to CATHERINE T. WAGNER, his sister. If she died before he did it was to be divided among her children. The second share was to go to his nephew WILLIAM H. GRUBB and the third to his nephew CHARLES B. GRUBB. Both of these nephews were children of his brother HENRY T. GRUBB.

She married JESSE GAUGLER 1849 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. (JESSE GAUGLER is #25614.) JESSE was born 22 February 1827 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. JESSE was the son of MICHAEL GAUGLER and ELISABETH JONES. JESSE died 07 March 1897 in U. Fred. Twp. Montgomery Co. PA, at age 70.
MARGARET GRUBB applied to have a guardian appointed after her father JOHN GRUBB died. The Orphan's Court appointed JOHN HILTEBEITEL as guardian and I think this was her uncle, her mother's brother. She was a minor but over the age of 14 as she was 15 years old at the time.
The Orphan's Court File is #6848 from Book 10 Page 184 dated 3 August 1848. It is held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

90. JACOB5 GRUBB (JOHN4, JACOB3, JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22395) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1820. JACOB died 27 February 1872 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 51.
He married MARIA date unknown. (MARIA is #24478.) MARIA was born 1828.
JACOB GRUBB held 14 acres of land on Ridge Road just south of the Bethel Church Road in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa.. I believe part of this land was where his father JOHN GRUBB lived so that may be how he acquired it although the father's property was sold at auction when he died.
He is shown in the1860 census at this location. His wife MARIA is with him as well as 4 children, OLIVIA S, age 6, LEWIS L., age 4, WILLIAM ALLEN, age 2 and HANNAH M., eleven months old. His real estate is valued at $2,500 and personal property at $375. Chester County 1860 census Roll 1093 Book 1 Page 258.
JACOB GRUBB was a stonemason but also a teacher of some type.. He and his family are shown in the 1870 census Roll 1323 Book 1 Page 92.
When JACOB GRUBB died on 27 February 1872 his brother HENRY GRUBB was appointed Administrator of the estate. He advised the Court there would not be sufficient personal property to pay any debts and therefore the real estate should be sold at public auction. HENRY had to advertise the date and place of the sale, in two newspapers for 4 consecutive weeks. The auction was held on 12 November 1872 and the highest bid was $2,970 made by John H. Brower.
According to the law the widow, MARIA, could take $300 worth of personal possessions for herself before the rest was sold and the estate settled. Guardians were appointed for the five minor children, OLIVIA, HANNAH, MARGARET, ALBERT and LAURA. The law required this so the estate could be probated through the Orphan's Court to protect their interests.. By the time the debts were paid it left $1,250.85 for the heirs. The widow, MARIA, would receive her one third as her dower right and the other two thirds would be divided equally among the 5 children.
The Administrative file is #16789 dated 11 March 1873. It is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa. .
JACOB GRUBB and MARIA had the following children:
i. MARGARET6 (#24481). MARGARET died before 1870 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age unknown.

He married MARY ANN. date unknown. (MARY ANN. is #24614.) MARY was born 1829. MARY died 20 January 1923 in Phoenixville, Chester Co., Pa., at age 93. Her body was interred after 20 January 1923 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
MARY ANN GRUBB, widow of HENRY GRUBB, in 1920 was living on Bridge Street in Phoenixville, Chester County, Pa. She was 90 years old at the time and living with her was one of her daughters, BERTHA GRUBB EYRIE. Chester County 1920 cenus Roll 1550 Book 2 Page 115.
She died Intestate on 20 January 1923. She was probably still living on Bridge Street where she had been in 1920
Her personal household items were appraised at $297 but the funeral expenses cost $428.40 so there was no estate left for the children
The Estate file is #39,166 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
HENRY GRUBB in 1860 was a blacksmith in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. He and his wife MARY ANN are both 31 and they have 3 children, JULIA ANN, age 4, GUSTAVUS, age 3 and a son JESSIE, age 1. His real estate is valued at $1,000 and personal property at $255. Chester County 1860 census Roll 1093 Book 1 Page 359.
HENRY GRUBB died Intestate on 14 April 1896 and his widow MARY ANN renounced her right to administer the estate. She petitioned the Court to allow two of her sons to be Administrators, GUSTAVUS and JESSE, which the Court granted. This must have been a thankless job as there was $709.52 of debts and expenses to be paid. There was no real estate owned by the deceased and when they auctioned off the personal property it only brought $515.29. So the estate was insolvent with nothing to even pay the widow her right to choose $300 value in goods before the estate was settled. The 9 sons and daughters, of course, received nothing and the two sons who acted as Administrators would have to make up the difference. The law at that time required anybody acting as an Administrator to put up a bond to cover any such situations.
The Administration file is #25,195 Book G Volume 7 Page 433 dated 12 May 1896. It is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.

He married LAVINIA E. date unknown. (LAVINIA E. is #24461.) LAVINIA died 30 March 1916 in E. Whiteland Twp. Chester Co., at age unknown.
LAVINIA E. GRUBB, widow of LEWIS C. GRUBB, died Intestate in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pa. on 30 March 1916. Her two children, ANNIE R., of East Whiteland, married to an Unknown Benner, and HUNTER H. GRUBB of Philadelphia, renounced their right to administer the estate. LAVINIA had left an estate valued at $2,090.71. By the time expenses were deducted, it left $2,276.28 to be divided between the two children.
The Administration File is #35,296 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
LEWIS GRUBB in 1850, when he was 26 years old, was working as an osler at a tavern in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. Census Roll 799 Book 1 Page 156b.
Later he purchased a farm on the border of Wallace and West Nantmeal Townships, in Chester County, Pa. and it consisted of 107 acres and 117 perches. He was heavily indebted with a mortgage of $4,000 on the property which was only valued a little above that. He died Intestate and his wife, LAVINIA E. GRUBB and THOMAS MILLARD were appointed Administrators. There were two minor children in the family, ANNIE and HUNTER, and so the mother petitioned the Court to have guardians appointed for them. They soon found there were insufficient assets to pay off the debts so the Court ordered the land to be sold at public auction.
LEWIS GRUBB must somehow have purchased this land from the person who bought it at auction when his father died Intestate and the land was sold at public auction. That may account for the very large mortgage on the property.
As required by law the Administrators had to advertise the sale which they did on 23 October 1879. The highest bidder was Mary H. Guest and she paid $5,440.42 for the house and property.
Then by law the widow could choose $300 worth of the personal goods and after that was done they declared there were no further items to be sold. By the time the mortgage and other debts were paid, there was nothing left in the estate to distribute. So all the widow and children derived from the estate was the $300 worth of personal items. This is a sad ending to the life of someone who probably worked very hard to make a success of his farm.
The Administration File is #19,325 dated 9 August 1881 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
LEWIS C. GRUBB and LAVINIA E. had the following children:
i. ANNIE R.6 (#24462) was born in E. Whiteland Twp. Chester Co.. She married UNKNOWN BENNER date unknown. (UNKNOWN BENNER is #26491.)
ii. HUNTER H. (#24463) was born in E. Whiteland Twp. Chester Co. 1874.
In 1910 HUNTER H. GRUBB was boarding with the John Stern family in Uchland Township, Chester County Pa. He was 36 years old and not married. He was a cattle dealer. Chester County 1910 census Roll 1329 Book 1 Page 21.
93. AARON B.5 GRUBB (JACOB4, CONRAD3, ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#23995) was born in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa. January 1838. AARON died 21 January 1902 in West Whiteland Twp. Chester Co, at age 64.
He married MARY ANN HALDEMAN date unknown. (MARY ANN HALDEMAN is #26367.) MARY was born September 1837. MARY was the daughter of UNKNOWN HALDEMAN and BARBARA.
MARY ANN HALDEMAN widow of AARON B. GRUBB ass still living in West Whitehead Township, Chester County, Pa in 1910. She is shown in the census for that year in Roll 1329 Book 2 Page 46.
AARON B. GRUBB was a farmer in West Whiteland Township, Chester Co. Pa. in 1870. He shows on the 1870 census with his wife MARY ANN HALDEMAN but no children Series M593 Roll 1325 Part 1 Page 319A.
By the 1900 census they show they have two children. The son's name is A. FRANCIS. He is 30 years old in 1900. Their daughter is 22 years old and is named ETTA B. Chester County 1900 census Roll 1394 Book 1 Page 209.
AARON B. GRUBB died Intestate on 21 January 1902. His daughter ETTA B. GRUBB was appointed Administrator of the estate. His widow, MARY ANN HALDEMAN by the current laws could choose $300 value of personal goods for herself before the estate was settled. Their farm in West Whiteland Township, Chester County, Pa. consisted of 67 acres and 36 perches. By the time MARY ANN had taken her widow's dower rights, there was only $88 of farm equipment left for the estate. As there were $163.35 of expenses to be paid it was clear the value of the property would not be sufficient to pay AARON's debts. MARY ANN petitioned the Court to allow the farm property to be sold at publis auction. This was granted and the farm was sold to Barbara Haldeman for $50 plus she had to pay off the $4,605.40 mortgage she had received from AARON GRUBB. This Barbara Haldeman probably was the sister of MARY ANN HALDEMAN, the widow of AARON GRUBB.
The Will is file #29,017 and the Orphan's Court file is #6794 Book 41 Page 86. They are both held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
AARON B. GRUBB and MARY ANN HALDEMAN had the following children:
i. A. FRANCIS6 (#26370) was born in West Whiteland Twp. Chester Co August 1870.
ii. ETTA B. (#26371) was born in West Whiteland Twp. Chester Co February 1878.
ETTA B. GRUBB was living on R.F.D. Route 1 in West Chester, Pa. at the time of her father's death on 21 January 1902. She was the Administrator of his estate.
94. JOHN NEWTON5 GRUBB (JACOB4, CONRAD3, ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#23999) was born in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa. February 1847.
He married MARY date unknown. (MARY is #26596.) MARY died before June 1900 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age unknown.
JOHN NEWTON GRUBB is shown in the census for Pottstown Borough, Montgomery County, Pa. in 1900 with 3 children ALLEN W age 20, MARTHA B. age 18 and MARY F. age 16. His wife must have predeceased him. The two girls are working as spoolers at a silk factory. Roll 1445 Book 1 Page 140. He is shown as a farmer even though he is living in Pottstown.
JOHN NEWTON GRUBB had the following children:
i. ALLEN W.6 (#26421) was born September 1879. ALLEN died 02 March 1959 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age 79. He married ALICE STAUFFER date unknown. (ALICE STAUFFER is #26431.) ALICE was born 1883. ALICE died 23 April 1966 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age 82.
ALICE STAUFFER widow of ALLEN W. GRUBB made her Will on 4 May 1962 but did not die until 23 April 1966. She had been occupying the same house as she and ALLEN GRUBB had been living in at 542 Willow Street in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa. Her unmarried sister-in-law MARTHA B. GRUBB had been living with them even before ALLEN had died. However MARTHA had died in May 1962 which is what probably prompted ALICE to make out her own will. MARTHA had left her an inheritance of $14,619,94 which hadn't been settled
I have not figured out yet the relationship of most of the inheritors of the Will of ALICE S. GRUBB. She bequeathed $1,000 to Nicholas and Leone Wilhelm who were her nephew and niece. She also left to Leone Wilhelm her diamond engagement ring and her leather bound bible. Another niece, Mrs. Lillian Walker was to receive $1,000. Still another niece, Mrs. Florence Bray was to receive $1,000. Her sister-in-law Mrs. Rosa Stauffer was also to receive $1,000. The residue of her estate was to be shared equally among Leone Wilhelm, niece, Samuel Stauffer, nephew, Kathryn Poremba, niece, and Agnes Diener, niece.
ALICE S. GRUBB nominated her nephew NICHOLAS WILHELM Executor. Her estate was quite extensive. The value of the house at 542 Willow Street in Pottstown had gone up to $11,000. She had quite a few investments which were sold as well as the house. She also had the interest in the estate of her sister-in-law MARTHA GRUBB. In all the estate was valued at $85,837.08. Unfortunately by this date the Estate Tax had gone up to 15% so that took $11,348.81 and by the time expenses were deducted it left $66,340.99 for distribution.
As required by law the settlement of the estate was advertised in the Montgomery County Law Reporter and the Pottstown Mercury to make sure there were no more legal heirs.
The Will is # 102,134 and the Orphan's Court file is #68,093. They are both held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
ALLEN W. GRUBB was living at 542 Willow Street in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa at the time of his death on 2 March 1959. As he died Intestate his widow ALICE S. GRUBB was appointed Administrator of the estate. This consisted of $7,450 value in the house mentioned above, and personal investments so the total came to $7,967. By the time expenses and the widow's exemption of $750 were deducted, the final value for dispersement was $4,261.50
There were no children involved so the legal heirs were his wife ALICE S. and his 2 unmarried sisters MARTHA B GRUBB and MARY F. GRUBB.
The Administration file is #87,702 and the Orphan's Court file is #66,502. Both of these are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
ii. MARTHA B. (#26422) was born February 1882. MARTHA died 21 October 1965 in Pennsburg, U. Hanover Twp. Pa., at age 83. Her body was interred after 21 October 1965 in Highland Cem. Pottstown, Pa..
MARTH B. GRUBB was a spinster who was living in Pennsburg, Montgomery County, Pa. at the time of her death on 21 October 1965. In her Will made on 7 May 1962 she bequeathed $200 to Frank and Linnie Brawn of Philadelphia, To Candice Piersol she left $100 for her kindness during her illness. All the rest of her estate was to be divided into thirds and these would go to ALICE S. GRUBB, her sister-in-law, Charles E. W. Hoffman, her friend and accountant and the last third to the Montgomery Association for the Blind.
She had two specific requests in her Will. The first was to be buried in the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa. The second was to have a similar headstone as her sister MARY F. GRUBB who had predeceased her.
The estate was extensive amounting to $56,136.98 which netted $48,067.39 after expenses and taxes. The bulk of this had been inherited from her sister MARY F. GRUBB who had died in 1962 leaving her entire estate to MARTHA. Each of the above one third shares amounted to $15,855.79. MARTHA B. GRUBB had numerous investments as well as a great deal of personal property that made up the above estate. She was also a coin collector and many valuable old coins were auctioned off as well as her personal property. The settling of the estate had to be advertised in 2 local papers so this was done in the Montgomery County Law Reporter and the Pottstown Mercury.
The Will is file #26,422 and the Orphan's Court file is #67,235. Both of these are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
iii. MARY F. (#26423) was born May 1884. MARY died 06 April 1962 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age 77. Her body was interred after 06 April 1962 in Highland Cem. Pottstown, Pa..
MARY F. GRUBB was a spinster living at 241 High Street in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa. She made her hand written Wll on 1 March 1954 but did not die until 6 April 1962. From the appearance of the writing in the Will, I would guess she had been seriously ill at that time and that was the reason for the sudden hand written Will. She stipulated that her sister MARTHA B. GRUBB should receive the entire estate.
The bulk of her estate was $24,379.59 in the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Pottstown. Along with some other investments and personal property, the estate totalled $37,397 but by the time expenses were deducted this was lowered to $31, 899.69 Then there was the 15% Estate Tax to be paid so her sister MARTHA B. GRUBB finally received $22,467.55.
The will is file #93,216 and the Orphan's Court file is #63,411. Both of these are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
95. JOHN5 GRUBB (ABRAHAM4, CONRAD3, ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#23993) was born in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa. 1820. JOHN died 04 April 1906 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 85. His body was interred after 04 April 1906 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
He married REBECCA date unknown. (REBECCA is #24465.) REBECCA was born 1830. REBECCA died 1912 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 82. Her body was interred 1912 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
JOHN GRUBB and his wife REBECCA were living on their farm in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. in 1860 They had 4 children, HANNAH, age 8, SARAH ANN, age 6, JAMES, age 4 and JOHN, age 2, The real estate was valued at $1,500 and his personal property at $300. Chester County 1860 census Roll 1093 Book 1 Page 358.
JOHN GRUBB was a Blacksmith and was still on the above farm in East Coventry as shown in the census of 1870 when he was 50 years old. Roll 1323 Book 1 Page 88. He was shown in the East Coventry Township Business directory of 1873 as a Blacksmith and Farmer
This small farm of 11 acres and 117 perches was on the border of East Coventry and East Vincent Townships, Chester County, Pa. It was located near the corner where Eberhare Road meets the road running north to Detweilers's Mill. He had purchased the property from GEORGE GRUBB for $1,300 on 30 March 1875.
When JOHN GRUBB died on 4 April 1906, Truman Wade and George Roberts were appointed Administrators of the estate and they soon determined there would not be sufficient assets to pay his debts. In fact it was most unusual that they declared he had no personal property whatsoever. They advised the Court the land would have to be sold. They sold it at public auction and the highest bidder only offered $880. By the time the expenses were paid it only left $670.15 to be divided among the heirs. The widow, REBECCA, would receive her one third as her dower right and the other two thirds was divided among the children and grand children.
The Administration File is #31061 dated 26 march 1908 and the Orphan's Court file is #8319. All these documents are held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.
JOHN GRUBB and REBECCA had the following children:
i. ALICE6 (#24469) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P. She married UNKNOWN BORKEY date unknown. (UNKNOWN BORKEY is #24470.)
ii. HANNAH (#24468) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1852.
In 1880 HANNAH GRUBB, age 27, was working as a servant in the home of widow Maria Kulp in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa. Roll 1160 Book1 page 520.
Amazingly she was still working as a servant in 1920 when she was 68 years old. She was employed on the farm of the Arthur Bealer family in South Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. It appears she never married. She was the last person by the name of GRUBB in South Coventry Township so presumably when she died the GRUBB name ended in that township. Chester County 1920 census R0oll 1550 Book 2 page 213.
187 iii. SARAH ANN was born 1854
iv. JAMES (#26563) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1856.
JAMES GRUBB at age 13 was working as a laborer on the farm of John Henley in 1870. This was in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. Chester County 1870 census Roll 1323 Book 1 page 88.
On the 1883 Breou's Farm Atlas JAMES is shown as owning 10 acres and 10 perches of land. It is located on the east side of Ridge Road just south of the Bethel Church Road. This is in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa.
v. JOHN H. (#24466) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1858. He married ELEANOR 1887. (ELEANOR is #26430.) ELEANOR was born 1867.
The 1893 the Montgomery County Atlas shows JOHN H. GRUBB farming on the west side of East Swamp Creek just south of Marlboroughville. The nearest Post Office is Hoppenville
He is shown in the 1910 East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. as a farmer. His wife is ELEANOR but they never had any children although they had been married for 23 years. Roll 1327 Book 2 Page 225.
vi. CLARA (#24471) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1861. She married UNKNOWN KELLER date unknown. (UNKNOWN KELLER is #24472.)
vii. WILLIAM H. (#24467) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1862.
viii. HARRY (#24604) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1867. HARRY died 1869 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P, at age 2. His body was interred 1869 in Brownback's Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..
ix. ELIZABETH (#26388) was born in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. P 1870.
96. SILAS5 GRUBB (JACOB4, DAVID3, ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#22000) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 19 November 1819. SILAS died 10 November 1876 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 56. His body was interred after 10 November 1876 in Bertolet Cem., Frederick Twp. Montgomery Co..
He married ELIZABETH BERTOLET 17 January 1847 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. (ELIZABETH BERTOLET is #22152.) ELIZABETH was born 15 February 1825 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa.. ELIZABETH was the daughter of JOHANNES BERTOLET and CATHARINE DETWEILER. ELIZABETH died 09 September 1893 in Frederick Twp, Montgomery Co. Pa., at age 68. Her body was interred date unknown in Bertolet Cem., Frederick Twp. Montgomery Co..
In the 1880 census of Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. it shows widow ELIZABETH GRUBB living with two of her daughters MARY and KATE. Roll 1157 Book 1 Page 111.
ELIZABETH BERTOLET GRUBB. widow of SILAS GRUBB died Intestate on 9 September 1893. Her son NATHANIEL B. GRUBB was appointed Administrator of the estate. He filed his first Inventory and Appraisal on 3 October 1894. It is found in Book 6 Page 429 File #19,179. He valued the estate at $488.65. It was reaffirmed in the final settlement on 27 September 1895 in file #21,672 They are held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
SILAS GRUBB farmed on the south side of Colonial Road about two miles west of the Great Road (Skippack Pike now known as Highway #73). The property consisted of 86 acres and 30 perches. In 1870 the real estate was valued at $5,000 and personal property at $3,000. He and his family are shown in the 1870 census of Frederick Township. Roll 1377 Book 1 Page 372b.
He made his Will on 6 November 1876 and died four days later on 10 November 1876. His Will is somewhat unusual as he left ELIZABETH BERTOLET, his wife, as much of his personal possessions as she wanted to keep. He then stipulated that the farm should be sold at public auction unless their son Jacob Nathan Grubb wanted to take over the farm at an appraised value. In either case $2,000.00 was to be left as an investment in the property and ELIZABETH was to receive the income from this for her lifetime. Of course by law ELIZABETH could pick out $300 value of goods for herself before the estate was settled. If their son, Jacob Nathan Grubb took over the farm he would have to pay the appraised value into the estate. JACOB NATHAN GRUBB did elect to take over the estate at the appraised value of $5466. Of this amount $2,000 was set aside as a dowry right and the interest was to be paid to the widow Elizabeth for her lifetime. There was $66 of court expense and the balance of $3,400 was divided equally between the 5 children, Jonathon, Nathaniel, Jacob, Mary and Catharine, so they each received $680. The sale of the personal property brought another $2,370 which was diviided between the widow and the children. The sons Nathaniel and Jacob were appointed as Executors of the estate. The Will was proven on 25 November 1876.
At the time of her father's death CATHARINE BERTOLET GRUBB was 13 years old so a guardian was appointed to protect her interest in the estate. The guardian appointed was Michael S. Wagner. The Orphan's Court Papers are #6287.
The Will is #2371 found in Montgomery County Will Book 14 Page 501 and held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. There are also the Orphan's Court Papers which are #6995 Book 22 Page 302.

We know that when MOSES H. GRUBB died he had been living in Royersford, Chester County, Pa. As he died Intestate, Nathaniel Dotterer was appointed Administrator. The above property was deemed too small to be divided among the widow and children so it was sold to Marietta Fulmer for $1,500. By the time all debts were paid the estate was only valued at $484. 80. This was divided between the 3 daughters MYRNA, HATTIE and BLANCHE and the grandson (son of a deceased daughter ADA). The widow had already chosen her "widow's right" which was up to $300 value of goods before the personal property was sold.

He married KATE LUBOLD PENNYPACKER 03 December 1863. (KATE LUBOLD PENNYPACKER is #21963.) KATE was born 26 September 1842. KATE was the daughter of ARNOLD PENNYPACKER and MARY ANN LUBOLD. KATE died 29 June 1919 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age 76.
When KATE LUBOLD PENNYPACKER GRUBB died on 29 June 1919, she had been predeceased by her husband HENRY RIXTINE GRUBB, who died in 1916. They had two children MARY ADA GRUBB and EDWIN PRICE GRUBB. MARY had been married to GEORGE PRICE WANGER but was now deceased and had left 9 children who were all legal heirs to the estate.
KATE died Intestate so her son EDWIN PRICE WANGER and her son-in-law GEORGE PRICE WANGER were appointed Administrators of the estate. This comprised a house at 330 Chestnut Street in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pa. which had been erected on two lots. The Administrators applied to the Court to sell the property as obviously it could not be divided among all the grandchildren. This was granted as well as the right of EDWIN P. WANGER to bid at the auction sale. He was successful with his bid at $2,800. This would be paid into the estate total to be divided among the heirs.
There was a small insurance policy and some furniture to be sold. But there was also debts to be paid and inheritance tax so the final estate amounted to $1,282.96. Half went to the son, EDWIN PRICE GRUBB who received $641.48. The other half was divided among the grandchildren so they each received $71.28.
All of the above transactions took a tremendous amount of Orphan's Court activities and paperwork. These are File #32344 held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.
HENRY RIXTINE GRUBB and his wife KATE LUBOLD PENNYPACKER were living in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. in 1900. He is working as a day laborer. Chester County 1900 census Roll 1393 Book 1 Page 181a.

JOHN WISMER GROBB's first wife CATHARINE TALLMAN died when she was only 22 years old. He remarried to FRANCES HUNSBERGER and they farmed in South Cayuga Township, Haldimand County, Ontario. His son SYLVESTER had gone to Manitoba and wote an interesting letter to his parents in 1888, urging them to sell out and move to Manitoba. A transcript of this letter can be found in the biographical notes for SYLVESTER and it was typical of the "Manitoba Fever" that prevailed at that time. The railway had just been put through and reached Winnipeg in the late 1870s. Land was cheap and the government had given the railway all the land for a right of way and they were offering cheap rail fares to reach Manitoba, So in 1889 JOHN WISMER GROBB moved to Manitoba in the area of Treherne as his son had urged. Mrs. Beverly DeSpierelaere of Bruxelles, Manitoba, was kind enough to send a copy of this letter to me.

On November 16 1905, Eli shot the sheriff of Treherne, Manitoba. This was reported to Delbert Grobb, by his brother Frank, in a letter written and dated November 20, 1905. It was not stated whether the sheriff was killed, or just injured, and it is not known how long Eli spent in jail because of his action. It is probable, that because Eli lived to a "ripe old age", that the sheriff was only injured. Otherwise Eli probably would have been hung! (The Death Penalty was in vogue at that time!)

"According to the Treherne history, Mr. Grobb, wife, and family came with 3 CPR cars of machinery, household effects, enough lumber to build a house and 2 hound dogs to chase and catch wolves. I have never heard that there were many/any wolves in the area but there was much scuttlebutt in Ont. about western conditions. My Grandpa Matchett was presented with a pistol when he came west the same year to fight off the Indians. Being just 2 yrs. after the Riel Rebellion, they thought he needed such protection! He kept it around but to my knowledge its use was negligible. The natives in that area were not cantankerous."
