7. DAVID3 GRUBB SR. (GEORGE2, HEINRICH1) (#18078) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 01 January 1749. DAVID died 10 September 1809 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 60. His body was interred after 10 September 1809 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

He married CATHARINE HARWICK date unknown. (CATHARINE HARWICK is #18079.) CATHARINE was born 1755. CATHARINE died 28 December 1822 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 67. Her body was interred after 28 December 1822 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

DAVID GRUBB served in the Revolutionary War. He was in Captain Brownback's Company, Ist Class on 12 August 1780. See Pennsylvania Archives Series 5, Volume 5, Page 531.

DAVID GRUBB is shown in the Coventry Township land assessment of 1783 as owning 90 acres of land, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 8 sheep, 4 members in the family 1 house and 1 outbuilding.

The original patents to DAVID GRUBB for two tracts of land are shown in Patent Book P2 Page 413 dated 7 April 1784 for 121 acres and 134 perches. The second plot is shown in Patent Book P2 Page 412. dated 7 April 1784 for 67 acres and 32 perches. The two plots are adjacent to each other in East Coventry Township, Chester County Pa.

They are located on Kulp Road running south from Haldeman Road. Pigeon Creek runs right through the centre and DAVID GRUBB had a mill on the creek in the northwest corner. The house and barn were located on the east side of Kulp Road just below the bend where Pigeon Creek crosses under the road. The northeast and southeast corners of the property were divided into several wood lots and the one at the southern end was next to a lot reserved for a schoolhouse.

In 1798 the State of Pennsylvania imposed a Direct Tax which people called "the window tax" or "the glass tax". This was because they were taxed on the size of the house and barn but also on the number of window panes in the house. Not many of these records have survived but luckily for us they have survived in Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa.

The following are the Direct Tax descriptions of DAVID GRUBB'S house which was very large for the time.

       House - 25 feet by 30 feet - stone - Panes - 2 - 5 - 15

       Kitchen - 18 feet by 20 feet - stone - Panes - 1 - 5 - 12

       Spring house - 10 feet by 12 feet - stone - Pane - 1

       Value - $800

On 20 March 1802 DAVID GRUBB purchased 29 acres and 12 perches of land in Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. from the estate of John Switzer, deceased. He paid $1,053.65 but I can't determine from the deed the location of this land. I also can't find John Switzer's land but I am assuming it would be beside his other land near Pigeon Creek and Kulp Road. It is shown in Chester County Deed Book T2 Page 820.

Two years before the death of DAVID GRUBB SR. he sold 157 acres of land to his son DAVID GRUBB JR. This was most of the land DAVID GRUBB SR. had received as a patent in 1784. DAVID GRUBB JR. paid £1,390 7 shillings and 6 pence. The deed is dated 1 July 1807 and is shown in Chester County Deed Book C3 page 36 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester. Pa.

When DAVID GRUBB SR. died in 1809 he was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery at the Union Meeting House in Parkersford, East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa.

SOURCE of INFORMATION

From Janice Dasher -Source: Bulletin of Historical Society of Montgomery Co, Vol. XXVI Spring 1989 #4, "Where Did They Go? Facts about Montgomery Countians from the Miscellaneous Books Book I (1819) through Book II (1824)", Collected by Agnes Baker Jefferson, pg 293.

When ABRAHAM GRUBB died in March 1834 his wife MARGARETHA renounced her right to be Administrator of the estate. She asked that her sons GEORGE and SAMUEL along with her son-in-law GEORGE MAUCK be appointed as Administrators. Evidently this request was not granted as the two Administrators who filed the inventory were Samuel Shnell and Jacob Kraus. The inventory amounted to $852.80.

The farm consisted of 132 acres and 130 perches, partly in Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. and partly in Lower Pottsgrove Township. It was on the Turnpike from Pottstown to Reading and his neighbours were Levi Kepler, Sam Hertenstein, Aaron Kulp and J. Hertzel.

Somehow under circumstances which are not clear, the son GEORGE GRUBB sold the land to George Messinger on 1 April 1835 and the proceeds were divided among the legal heirs of ABRAHAM GRUBB. But evidently this legacy was not all paid off by the purchaser or the Administrator and a lien was attached to the property of $1,63.14. This came to light many years later when Harry W. Kepler purchased a portion of the above land. He was told he did not have clear title because of this old lien. He applied to the Courts to have it sorted out. They discovered that all the children of ABRAHAM GRUBB, who were JACOB, GEORGE, SAMUEL and SARAH, were all deceased. The sherif then had to advertise for any possible living heirs of those children. So he ran advertisements in the Montgomery County newspapers but no heirs turned up to make a claim. Thus Harry Kepler was granted clear title to the land

These Administrative Papers are held by Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. The later legal papers in 1920 are contained in the Orphan's Court Files Book 77 Page 495.

ABRAHAM GRUBB and MARGARETHA ZOLLERS had the following children:

         23      i.  SARA4 was born 7 November 1792

ii.  JACOB (#22017) was born in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 24 September 1794. JACOB died December 1794 in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa, at age unknown.

24    iii.  JACOB was born 28 January 1796

25    iv.  GEORGE was born 06 September 1797

                  v.  UNKNOWN (#22024) was born in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 23 June 1799. UNKNOWN died 02 June 1811 in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa, at age 11. His body was interred after 02 June 1811 in N. Hanover Reform. Ch. Cem. Mo.

 10. GEORGE3 GRUBB (JACOB2, HEINRICH1) (#22005) was born in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 1754. GEORGE died 06 September 1808 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age 54.

He married MAGDALENA LEHR 25 June 1781. (MAGDALENA LEHR is #22011.) MAGDALENA was the daughter of NICHOLAS LEHR. MAGDALENA died before 06 September 1808 in Pottstown, Montgomery Co., Pa., at age unknown.

In his Will the personal estate of GEORGE GRUBB was divided evenly between his two daughters ELIZABETH and SUSANNA. However if they could not agree on the division of goods, then they were to be sold and the amount raised should be divided equally between them. This applied to everything except his wearing apparel which was to be given to the poor. Edward Potts was to receive £5. GEORGE GRUBB'S wife MAGDALENA LEHR must have predeceased him as there is no mention of her in his will. The Executors were his brother Abraham Grubb and Abraham Scheloff. The witnesses were Edward Potts and Abraham Zimmerman.

There is no mention of real estate in the will so he must have been renting the land. The inventory is made up of farm equipment as well as household goods so he probably was farming in Pottsgrove Township and not in the town itself. The total inventory amounted to £1,142 10 shillings and 1 pence.

The will is shown in Montgomery County Will Book 3 Page 87. It was dated 17 November 1807 and proved 19 October 1808. There are supposed to be Orphan's Court Records under File #6472 but they are missing from the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

DANIEL GRUBB, son of JOHN GRUBB and ANNELENA CHRISTMAN, received £25 from the will of his uncle CONRAD GRUBB when he died in 1798. Montgomery County Will Book "N" 2 Page 590 will # 2124 dated 13 February 1786 proved 29 May 1798.

DANIEL GRUBB died 24 September 1821 leaving a will which is #6965 in Chester County Will Book "O" Volume 14 Page 28, DANIEL left his wife, CATHARINE GRIM household articles and $200 cash for immediate needs. She also had the use of the house with provisions for firewood as needed.

The plantation was divided between two sons. JOHN GRUBB was to receive 75 acres on the northwest side of the farm and it included any buildings. The balance of the farm was to go to the other son DANIEL.

Daughter MARY who was married to LEWIS FORGUS was to receive £500 but offset against this was the loan already made to Lewis Forgus. Daughter CATHARINE, married to ABRAHAM MOWRAH, was to receive £500.

Son JOHN and son-in-law ABRAHAM MOWRAH were to be Executors. The estate amounted to $3053.51. A copy of the will and detailed inventory are in my files.

 12. JOHN CHRISTMAN3 GRUBB (JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#18292) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 11 March 1753. JOHN died 29 November 1830 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 77. His body was interred after 29 November 1830 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

He married MARGARET LEHR date unknown. (MARGARET LEHR is #18305.) MARGARET died 14 April 1829 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age unknown. Her body was interred after 14 April 1829 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

JOHN CHRISTMAN GRUBB SR., son of JOHN GRUBB and ANNELENA CHRISTMAN, received £35 from the will of his uncle CONRAD GRUBB when he died in 1798. Copy of this will is in my files taken from Montgomery County Will Book N Volume 2 Page 590 will # 2124 dated 13 February 1786 proved 29 May 1798.

On the 1 April 1809 JOHN CHRISTMAN GRUBB purchased land from John Rinehart who was acting as Administrator of the estate of HENRY GRUBB, deceased. It is 33 acres and fifteen perches and he paid £496 8 shillings and one a half pence. Although I don't have it plotted yet I know it is in the same area as all the other land owned by the various Grubb brothers and their children because in the description it names many of the neighbour's properties. This is in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. It is in the general area bounded by Kulp Road, Eberhare Road and Fulmar Road. The deed is found in the Chester County Deed Book C3 Page 526.

The 1783 Coventry Township, assessment of land holders shows JOHN GRUBB owning 149 acres, 3 horses, 4 horned cattle, 6 sheep, 5 members in the family, 1 house and 1 outbuilding.

There is a document in the Chester County Orphan's Court files where JOHN CHRISTMAN GRUBB petitions the court to have a guardian appointed for his daughter CATHERINE. She is a minor but over the age of 14. John's wife MARGARET LEHR has just died on 14 April 1829. The concern is that CATHARINE has inherited a legacy from her grandfather NICHOLAS LEHR. JOHN may have been in poor health as it turned out that he died the next year. The guardian appointed was WILLIAM POSEY. The Orphan's Court file is #8616 dated 5 May 1829.

At the time JOHN GRUBB made his will he already had an agreement with his son JOHN GRUBB to care for he and his wife MARGARET LEHR for the remainder of their lives. He probably had turned over the property to son JOHN GRUBB on this condition as there is no mention of the farm property in this will.

The will leaves all the household furnishings to wife MARGARET as well a $300 cash for her use. He leaves $1066.67 to be divided between the children of his son JACOB who is deceased. He also leaves $300 to the children of daughter ELIZABETH GRUBB SAYLOR, who is deceased. The balance of the estate is to be divided equally between his other children, DANIEL, JOHN, CATHARINE and MARGARET The Executors were son JOHN GRUBB and sons-in-law ISAAC MOWRER and JACOB LEHR. Witnesses were SAMUEL SOWDER and JACOB ECKER. The estate amounted to $1885.26.

The will is #8611 Chester County Will Book E Volume 16 Page 358.

HENRY GRUBB shows in the Coventry Township land assessment of 1783 as owning 60 acres of land, 3 horses, 3 horned cattle, 6 sheep, 6 members in the family, 1 house and 1 outbuilding.

HEINRICH CHRISTMAN GRUBB purchased 24 acres and 121 perches of land in Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. from Frederick Tilman on 1 July 1797. He paid £166 5 shillings. The deed states it is beside his other property but I have not plotted this as yet to locate the exact position. It must be near Pigeon Creek in the area of Eberhare Road and Kulp Road. When I visited the area in 1995 and talked to a Mr. Kulp who is still living on Kulp Road and asked about Grubb properties, he just waved his hands and said the Grubbs owned a very large number of acres between the brothers and their descendants. The deed above is from Chester County Deed Book P2 Page 61.

HEINRICH C. GRUBB, son of JOHN GRUBB and ANNELENA CHRISTMAN, received £25 from the will of his uncle CONRAD GRUBB when he died in 1798. From Montgomery County Will Book "N" 2 Page 590 will # 2124 dated 13 February 1786 proved 29 May 1798.

Because this is the cemetery where HEINRICH CHRISTMAN GRUBB is buried, I thought the following account would be of interest as well as the fact the book it was taken from was still in existence.

"LEYDICH BURYING GROUND by JOHN R. TALLIS

Formerly, due to the fact that there were no church yards near, it was customary in rural sections among the leading families to bury their dead on their homesteads. For this purpose an elevation overlooking the farm, or near a stream was usually chosen. The largest, private burying ground in this district is known as the Leydich cemetery. It is located in the southwestern part of Frederick Township east of Swamp Creek near the cross roads one mile south Keelor's Church. A unique spot was chosen at the junction of four farms owned respectively by: Rev. John Phillip Leydich, Christian Stetler, George Michael Kuntz and George Moore; an equal square portion from each farm was set aside by each family. This plot was at first was surrounded by a beautiful grove of White Oak and Hickory trees, which since has been cut down and all that now remains are a few trees that mark the fence lines. The plot is about 100 square feet in size and is kept in an excellent state of preservation. A stone wall was built in the fall of 1783. the corners of which point direct to the cardinal points of the compass; the corner of the Stetler plot points to the north, of the Moore plot to the east, of the Kuntz plot to the south and of the Leydich plot to the west. According to the will of Christian Stetler another 1/4 of an acre is willed to the cemetery on the Stetler side; and George Moore willed a piece of land to run the length of the wall and reach out 40 feet from it on the entrance gate side so that there would be space! for the teams at a funeral; these extra plots are not enclosed but are at present farmed by the present owners of the surrounding farms. Before Keelor's church was built, the Reformed Congregation voted to locate the church at this burial ground but the location was voted down by the small margin of three votes.

There is still in existence an old record book of the burying ground. The entries are written in fine old German script and neatly kept. The first entry of the expenses of building the stone wall in the Fall of 1783 and translated into English reads as follows.

Record of the first expenses, on the burial place the 27th of November 10 in the year of 1783 .

Paid to the helpers. ..........;.............. 3- 2-6

                                                Total - £ 36-4-8

The rum mentioned in the expenses was made at a public distillery which was located on the road leading from the plot to Fagleysville. The farmers brought in their rye grain and the rum was distilled on shares, the farmer taking half and. the distillery half.

To meet these expenses a subscription was taken up amongst the surrounding neighbors and friends. There is a record from 30 November 1783 of 24 men who contributed but as our interest is in HEINRICH CHRISTMAN GRUBB we will only show his contribution which was "Henrich Grob £ 0-7-6". There was a further collection taken in 1797 to which Heinrich contributed £ 2-2-6.

In this same old book there is a complete list of all persons buried in the Leydich Cemetery but it is too long to include here. It includes several Grubbs, some wives and children."

On 18 February 1819 HENRY CHRISTMAN GRUBB and his wife ANNA MARIA sold 50 acres of land to their son HENRY SCHETLER GRUBB for £800. This land was on the south side of Colonial Road and about a mile west of the Skippack Pike (now called Highway 73). This was Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. It was bounded by lands of John Schwenk, George More, John Krause, Jacob Krause, and Michael Kuntz. This deed is found in Montgomery County Deed book 61 Page 236 and was recorded on 3 November 1842. It is held by Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.    On 8 November 1827 HENRY CHRISTMAN GRUBB sold 62 acres and 138 perches of land to his son HENRY SCHETLER GRUBB for $240. This deed is found in Montgomery County Deed Book 61 Page 237 and is held by the Montgomery County Archives in

Norristown, Pa.

HEINRICH C. GRUBB was a member of Keelor's Church which was Lutheran and located on the corner of Skippack Pike (Highway 73) and Neifer Road. This church is now called St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

JACOB GRUBB, son of JOHN GRUBB, was evidently a favourite nephew of CONRAD GRUBB. When the latter died childless he willed his farm to young JACOB with other provisions for JACOB's brothers and sister. This property was 100 acres of the original property purchased by HEINRICH GRUBB on Perkiomen Road, Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pa. which CONRAD had purchased from his brother HENRY.

JACOB lived in the large stone house built by his uncle CONRAD GRUBB and willed to him when his uncle died. It is located on the north side of Perkiomen Road, east of Skippack Pike (Highway #73 and on the east side of Scioto Creek. There are photographs taken in 1994 of the house and farm.

JACOB GRUBB and ELIZABETH KOLB had the following children:

                   i.  ELIZABETH4 (#22100) was born in New Hanover Twp. Montgomery Co. Pa 27 June 1787.

38     ii.  JOHN was born 28 May 1790

39    iii.  JACOB was born 13 April 1792

 15. CONRAD3 GRUBB (JOHN2, HEINRICH1) (#22080) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 06 December 1759. CONRAD died 25 March 1820 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 60. His body was interred after 25 March 1820 in Coventry Mennonite Cem. Chester Co.

He married ELIZABETH BAUGH date unknown. (ELIZABETH BAUGH is #22082.) ELIZABETH was born 14 March 1764 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. ELIZABETH was the daughter of JOHANNES BACH and CATHARINE CRUMPACKER. ELIZABETH died 24 March 1813 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 49. Her body was interred after 24 March 1813 in Coventry Mennonite Cem. Chester Co.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

It should always be kept in mind that this CONRAD GRUBB may NOT be the son of JOHN GRUBB. Some other family researchers show him as the son of HEINRICH GRUBB who arrived in Vincent Township, Chester County in 1743. This person is confused in many cases with "our" HEINRICH GRUBB. If it is ever proven that CONRAD GRUBB does NOT belong as a son of JOHN GRUBB then his wife ELIZABETH BAUGH and their children shown would have to be deleted from our Grubb line. He is NOT shown as one of the children in the Will of JOHN GRUBB.

He first purchase was on 1 February 1796 for 142 acres 12 perches on the bank of the Schuylkill River. He bought this from his father-in-law JOHN BAUGH and paid £1400. It was bordered by the lands of John Baugh, John Brownback, Jacob Stager and ran beside the Mennonite Burying Ground on Old Schuylkill Road. Before he died he sold this property to his son JESSE who in turn passed it along to his son OWEN whose name you can see on the 1873 map. The crossing of the river at this point was called Stager's Ford. This deed is found in Chester County Will Book N2 page 490 and is held by the Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa. A copy is in my files.

CONRAD GRUBB'S house which is large and substantial for the time is described as follows

       House 36 feet by 28 feet - stone - panes - 1 and a half -- 4 --12

       Kitchen included - panes - 2 - 4

Spring house - 10 feet by 8 feet - stone

       Value - $500

CONRAD next bought a small piece of land next to the above property. Again this was sold to him by his father-in-law, John Baugh. The deed is dated 25 April 1800 and he paid £100. It only comprised 6 acres and 2 perches. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book Y2 page 74.

Another small plot of land was purchased by CONRAD on 7 April 1804. It was 3 acres 148 perches and he paid £14 14 shillings and four and a half pence. Probably it was beside his other land but it is hard to tell from the deed but they mention the neighbouring lands as belonging to Moses Yokum and the Warwick Company. This may be the clue as later a canal was cut right through this property and "maybe" the Warwick Company was starting to buy up land for the canal. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book Y2 page 73.

CONRAD GRUBB was at it again on 8 January 1806 when he added another 3 acres and 91 perches. Again this was from his father-in-law John Baugh Sr. He paid £75 and it was located beside all the above properties. The deed mentions three of the neighbours who are all related to the Grubbs in one way or another. There was John Baugh Jr., Rudolph Harley and John Stauffer. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book Z2 page 285.

But CONRAD GRUBB was not through with acquiring land just yet. On 1 April 1812 he purchased another 38 acres and 100 perches from Peter Stager for $1,794. Note that the currency had changed from pounds to dollars by this date. The property was adjacent to all his other land running along the Schuylkill River and back to the Old Schuylkill Road. This road runs north from Parkersford. While I was researching in this area I often had lunch at a little restaurant which was located on the western edge of this property. CONRAD's neighbours were Peter Stager, John Stauffer and Henry Saybolt. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book G3 page 156.

I found a rather strange deed dated 5 March 1806 from MARTIN URNER to JONAS URNER and CONRAD GRUBB. It transfers 4 plots of land in East Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. and they are all adjoining the land of CONRAD GRUBB along the Schuylkill River. The 4 plots totalled over 284 acres so it was a large area. MARTIN URNER was the father of JONAS URNER who had married CONRAD's daughter SUSANNA. The deed transfers land on the condition that it be maintained and that MARTIN URNER and his wife BARBARA would be taken care of for the rest of their lives. After they both died the land was to become the property of the children of JONAS URNER. It is unclear as to whether CONRAD GRUBB is included because of his daughter SUSANNA. Another daughter CATHARINE was married to JOHN URNER, the brother of JONAS so it gets to be quite a tangled relationship in regard to the inheritance of the land. This deed is found in the Chester County Deed Book Z2 page 236.

CONRAD GRUBB died Intestate but leaving a very large estate. Administrators appointed were his son Jesse Grubb, John Urner, son-in-law and husband of daughter Elizabeth, and Andrew Buzzard, son-in-law and married to daughter Catharine. The Estate File is #6772 and held at the Chester County Archives in West Chester. It was filed 9 June 1821. The estate amounted to $10,044.55. There is a detailed inventory of possessions and debts. It does not detail the distribution of the estate after the debts were paid.

The heirs evidently could not agree on possession of the farm which was about 113 acres on the Schuylkill River in East Coventry Township, Chester County. The court agreed to letting it be put up for public auction (or outcry) and this was held on 29 September 1821. The highest bidder was GEORGE EVANS of West Nantmeal Township and he paid $5,554.45. we can only assume the heirs divided this evenly among themselves. These Orphan's Court proceedings are shown in Chester County Orphan's Court Book 13 Page 545.

CONRAD GRUBB was buried in the Mennonite Burying Ground on Old Schuylkill Road. This was located on the edge of the Conrad Grubb farm which ran from this road down to the banks of the Schuylkill River.

CONRAD GRUBB and ELIZABETH BAUGH had the following children:

                   i.  JACOB4 (#22083) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 12 March 1787. JACOB died 06 April 1867 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. PA, at age 80. His body was interred after 06 April 1867 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

                            IMPORTANT NOTICE

It is questionable whether this JACOB GRUBB was a son of CONRAD GRUBB and ELIZABETH BAUGH. He is not mentioned in the petition to the Orphan's Courts when CONRAD GRUBB died Intestate and his heirs were petitioning to protect their rights.

ii.  CATHARINE (#22085) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 14 April 1790. She married ANDREW BUZZARD date unknown. (ANDREW BUZZARD is #22324.)

40    iii.  BARBARA was born 16 April 1790

iv.  SUSANNA (#22086) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 04 December 1792. She married JONAS URNER date unknown. (JONAS URNER is #25014.) JONAS was born date unknown in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. JONAS was the son of MARTIN URNER and BARBARA.

         41     v.  JESSE was born 06 February 1796

vi.  ELIZABETH (#22096) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 09 June 1797. She married JOHN URNER date unknown. (JOHN URNER is #22087.) JOHN was born date unknown in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. JOHN was the son of MARTIN URNER and BARBARA.

vii.  MARY (#22097) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 16 May 1799.

viii.  HANNA (#22098) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 16 July 1803. HANNA died 19 February 1878 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. PA, at age 74. Her body was interred after 19 February 1878 in Coventry Mennonite Cem. Chester Co. She married SAMUEL WILLAUER date unknown. (SAMUEL WILLAUER is #22099.) SAMUEL was born 31 March 1799. SAMUEL died 24 January 1870 in E. Coventry Twp. Chester Co. PA, at age 70. His body was interred after January 1870 in Coventry Menn. Cem. Chester Co.

After the death of her father, CONRAD GRUBB, HANNAH GRUBB petitioned the Orphan's Court to appoint a guardian for her. This is shown in the Orphan's Court records dated 31 July 1821. She was a minor but over the age of 14 (actually she was age 17). This was a protection for children in the distribution of estates of a parent who had died.

 16. CONRAD3 GRUBB (ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#147) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 04 September 1757. CONRAD died 23 March 1839 in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa., at age 81. His body was interred after 23 March 1839 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

He married ELIZABETH KELLAR date unknown. (ELIZABETH KELLAR is #1342.) ELIZABETH was born 30 August 1760. ELIZABETH died 15 February 1815 in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa., at age 54.

CONRAD GRUBB served in the Militia in the Revolutionary War. He was in Captain Brownback's company on 24 September 1781. See Pennsylvania Archives Series 5, Volume 5, Page 538.

CONRAD was a yeoman (farmer) in West Nantmeal Township, Chester County, Pa. He purchased his farm on 3 October 1801 from Charles Packingham and his wife Jane. It consisted of 100 acres and he paid £500. I have not found the exact location but the land was bordered by the lands of John Lewis, Thomas Millard, James McLure, Samuel McEldieff and Thomas Bull. This deed is found in Chester County Deed Book T2 page 830 and is held by Chester County Archives in West Chester, Pa.

On 1 April 1806 CONRAD GRUBB purchased more land from the married daughters of Conrad Grim. It was 35 acres and 37 perches and he paid £300. This doesn't appear to be near his other land as it says in the deed it is in Coventry Township and not West Nantmeal. It is bordered by the lands of Nathan Roberts, John Kresman, John Stauffer, Rudolph Harley and Samuel Sowder. The deed is found in Chester County Deed Book D3 page 471.

His will was dated 25 October 1829 but he didn't die until 23 March 1839. His will is # 9341 in Chester County Will Book R Volume 17 Page 252. It was filed 6 June 1838 and proved 14 May 1839.

CONRAD'S wife ELIZABETH KELLER had died many years before, in 1815. This will is interesting because he favours two of his children by extra legacies because of their care of him. As he says "I give them for their services they done for me more than the other two of my children and continuing with me longer in my declining years and have paid every attention to me that my age and infirmities required as good and dutiful children".

This extra legacy was $150 for son JACOB and #200 for daughter ELIZABETH. He bequeathed the farm of 100 acres to son JACOB but Jacob had to pay $2,000.00 to the estate, over a period of time, if he wished to take it over. Son ABRAHAM received $100 and then the remainder of the estate including the $2,000,00 paid by JACOB was divided between all four children, JACOB, ABRAHAM, ELIZABETH and CATHARINE.

Executors were to be son JACOB GRUBB and son-in-law ABRAHAM HARLEY. Without the $2,000.00 coming from JACOB, the estate only amounted to $460.06.

CONRAD GRUBB and ELIZABETH KELLAR had the following children:

         42      i.  JACOB4.

         43     ii.  CATHARINE.

iii.  ELIZABETH (#22310) was born in W. Nantmeal, Chester Co., Pa.. ELIZABETH died 10 April 1876 at age unknown.

ELIZABETH GRUBB never married. In her will she left all her household goods to the children of her deceased brother JACOB GRUBB. They were Lewis C., Aaron, Joseph C., Sarah Grubb Robison and Newton Grubb.

She left her sister Catherine Grubb, widow of Abraham Harley, a $500 bond. To the children of her deceased brother Abraham, she left $5 each. But when the estate was finally settled they were to receive equal shares. Their names were David, Sarah Grubb Palmer, Martha Grubb Dunlap and John Grubb. Two of her nephews, Lewis C. Grubb and Joseph C. Grubb were appointed as Administrators. Witnesses were Cyrus F. Krauser and Thomas Millard.

The estate amounted to $1,489.98 but that included the bond and furniture which were bequeathed in the will. It is not possible to determine whether the children of her brother Abraham received anything further than their $5.

The Administration File is #18111 in the Chester County Archives at West Chester, Pa. dated 13 June 1876.

44    iv.  ABRAHAM was born CA 1785

 17. HENRY3 GRUBB (ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#149) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 01 January 1760. HENRY died 1827 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 67.

He married HANNAH DETWEILER date unknown. (HANNAH DETWEILER is #25851.) HANNAH was born 1824. She married UNKNOWN HUNSICKER date unknown.

HENRY GRUBB purchased a small piece of land in Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. from WILLIAM POSEY on 3 May 1794. It only contained 14 perches by three quarters of a perch. It was probably needed for addition to a homestead property as it would not be enough for farming. This deed is shown in Chester County Deed Book L2 Page 189/90 .

HENRY GRUBB left a Will but I have not located it as yet. It is referred to by his son's (HENRY H. GRUBB) widow LIZZIE B. GRUBB when she states in a Court Document that her son WILLIAM A. GRUBB was 11 years old at the time and he had been left a legacy by his grandfather HENRY GRUBB in his Will, of $1,000. This was after the death of her own husband HENRY H. GRUBB. She quotes from the Will as follows. "To my grandson WILLIAM A. GRUBB son of HENRY H. GRUBB, deceased, I give and bequeath the sum of One Thousand Dollars, to be paid to him in one year from the time of my decease if he should be at that time of lawful age, and if he at that time should be under the age of twenty-one years then the legacy shall be paid to the guardian lawfully appointed by the Orphan's Court."

All the above information is contained in the Orphan's Court file #7067 dated 23 January 1878 and held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

HENRY GRUBB and HANNAH DETWEILER had the following children:

                   i.  JONATHON W.4 (#25732).

ii.  SALLIE A. (#25853). She married UNKNOWN PALMER date unknown. (UNKNOWN PALMER is #25854.)

45    iii.  HENRY HUNSICKER was born 1839

 18. ESTHER3 GRUBB (ABRAHAM2, HEINRICH1) (#151) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa. 15 January 1764. ESTHER died 19 March 1831 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 67. Her body was interred after 19 March 1831 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

She married PETER MAURER date unknown. (PETER MAURER is #1344.) PETER was born 28 February 1764 in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa.. PETER died 3 June 1833 in E. Cov. Twp. Chester Co. PA, at age 69. His body was interred after 3 June 1833 in Oak Grove Cem. E. Coventry, Pa..

A detailed 3 page inventory of the estate was filed by the Executors, totaling $993.80 These detailed inventories are extremely interesting and it is too bad we don't have space here to show the inventory in it's entirety. They account for every "nut and bolt" even down to a few cents value. Also shown are all the payments for outstanding accounts owing or small debts to neighbours and friends.

The above land is the same property that PETER MAURER received in the Will of his father-in-law ABRAHAM GRUBB. He had first opportunity to take over the land at a stipulated price per acre.

ESTHER GRUBB and PETER MAURER had the following children:

                   i.  PETER4 (#22418) was born in Coventry Twp., Chester Co., Pa..

Coventry, Pa..

DAVID GRUBB son of ABRAHAM GRUBB and ELIZABETH FREY was a farmer in North Coventry Township, Chester County, Pa. He is shown in the 1850 census at age 82 with his wife MARY HARLEY, age 77. Their widowed daughter HANNAH was living with them with her 2 children SARAH, age 15, and JOSEPH, age 3. We don't know the name of her deceased husband. The real estate is valued at $4,000. Chester County 1850 census Roll 765 Book 1 Page 171.

He died on 5 September 1852 and his will is found at the Chester Coiunty Archives in West Chester, Will #12169 dated 12 April 1852 and proved 5 October 1852. It is shown in Chester County Will Book U Volume 20 Page 198.

It is a typical will of the time where the person leaves property to a child but a value is placed on it which must be paid by the recipient of the property at a particular time in the future. In this case DAVID GRUBB gave his son Moses first chance at the property under these conditions. He valued the farm at $50 per acre. If Moses declined the property then it went down the line of all the rest of the children including married daughters until one of them accepted. Of course there were other legacies to the children who did not receive the land. These were made up from other valuations of personal property of his estate. They called these "moveable goods".

MOSES GRUBB took up the offer in his father's will and took possession of the farm which at $50 per acres amounted to $3874.06. This equates to about 78 acres. There wasn't much left for the other children as the personal property only amounted to $352.63. But they would receive their share of what MOSES had to pay to the estate for the farm.

DAVID GRUBB and MARY HARLEY had the following children:

ABRAHAM GRUBB JR, was born 4 February 1771 in Coventry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. this area of Coventry Township was incorporated as East Coventry Township in 1844. His father was ABRAHAM GRUBB SR. and his mother was ELIZABETH FREY. He was a Mennonite by religion and a farmer by trade.

There is some confusion in picking up the first records of ABRAHAM back in Pennsylvania where he grew up. The 1796 tax records of East Coventry Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania show an Abraham Grubb Jr. as a "freeman" which designated "single and usually 21 or older". The trade was shown as "mason". This may NOT be "our" Abraham as we think he married Elizabeth Fretz in 1794. We also strongly feel that "our" Abraham Grubb Jr. must have gone to work in Hilltown Township, Buck's County where he met and married Elizabeth Fretz. We have proof now that is what his brother-in-law Michael Rittenhouse did. However in the case of Abraham Grubb we have not found any records of him In Hilltown as we did for Michael. But it makes more sense that he went there where the Fretz family was farming, met and married Elizabeth Fretz and travelled with them to Canada.

To add to the confusion the 1796 and 1799 tax records for the same township show an Abraham Grubb as a weaver. This could be either "our" Abraham or his father. However it is more likely the former as the father was a "cordwainer- shoemaker" by trade.

In the record book kept by Deacon Philip Wismer in 1804 it shows Abraham Grobb arriving at "the Twenty" in 1800 and the list includes John Fretz, Lawrence Hipple and Michael Rittenhouse. Abraham, Lawrence and Michael were all sons-in-law of John Fretz so it looks from that record that they all travelled together with their wives and children. Copy of this page is in my file. The Rittenhouse records state they all arrived in July of 1800.

ABRAHAM GROBB JR. with his wife ELIZABETH FRETZ and their 3 children emigrated to Canada in 1800. They travelled with a large group of relatives which included the families of his father-in-law JOHN FRETZ. This included Elizabeth's sisters DINAH FRETZ and her husband MICHAEL RITTENHOUSE, SARAH FRETZ and her husband LAWRENCE HIPPLE and many children. Baby JOHN GROBB must have been only two months old. Some of the records originally said they all arrived in 1799. However later information stated they arrived in July 1800. This was confirmed in the diary of Deacon Philip Wismer and a photocopy of this page is in my files.

ABRAHAM changed the family name from "GRUBB" to "GROBB" at that time. Interesting information about Abraham's sister SUSANNA GRUBB has been researched by ALice Lindsey of Michigan, a descendant of SUSANNA and her husband MICHAEL LAW. In the records in the Niagara area there has never been any mention of SUSANNA GRUBB travelling with the large group arriving at "The Twenty" in 1800. However it is most probable she was with the same group. She definitely would not have travelled alone and she would have been of great help with all the children. Anyway she went on to the Markham area and married MICHAEL LAW.

Signed Abraham Grobb York 16 June 1806

Abraham Grobb received 200 acres of Crown Lands Lot 13 Concession 1, Trafalger Township, Halford County (north of Dundas Street) 1 January 1808. Copy of the Crown Grant and Abstract Ledger Sheet are in my files. However he sold this property immediately to Peter Cline 3 March 1808. He probably knew he was going to be given property by his father-in-law John Fretz as explained below. Notice also this is when he changed the spelling of the name from Grubb to Grobb.

ABRAHAM'S father-in-law was JOHN FRETZ JR. who had brought his whole family to Canada in 1800. Abraham and Elizabeth Fretz Grobb would have travelled with them. John Fretz purchased 300 acres but when his wife died in 1810 he deeded his land to his 3 sons-in-law. ABRAHAM GROBB and ELIZABETH FRETZ GROBB received 100 acres Lot 7 Concession 3, Clinton Township, Lincoln County. This was on Instrument # 4025. Copy is in my files.

When ABRAHAM died in 1842 the property was willed to his son MOSES GROBB whose name appears on the 1775 Historical Atlas Map. Copy of this atlas is in my library as well as historical and modern maps showing the location of the farm.

In 1994 the property is still being farmed, mostly in fruit trees. However the old buildings are in derelict shape and only used now for migrant fruit pickers. Photographs taken in 1994 are in my file.
